Hi, I'm searching for information on John Custy, born about 1808 possibly in Knockmore, Dysert, County Clare. He emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts in 1849 with his wife Ann (Naylor?; 1810-1878), daughters Bridget (1839-1899) and Mary (1846-1882) and sons John (1841-1895) and Michael (1842-1864). Thanks!

  • Dear Kim:

Many thanks for your query to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.

The Ruan/Dysert parish registers have been transcribed on the Clare Library website and they are available here to view:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/don_tran/bmd/ruandysart_parish_baptism_records.htm

I only see a baptism record for Mary Custy with parents:  John Custy and Sally Considine.  The baptism record is dated 4 June 1846 and the address for the family is Carhue.  Sponsors for Mary were:  Michael Custy and Bridget Kean.  This record can be viewed digitally online through the NLI parish registers:  https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634715#page/8/mode/1up

Other children born to this couple were born between 1849-1858 and you can view those names under the link above.

This may not be the correct family as you have mentioned the townland of Knockmore, and the townland on the baptism record above is Carhue.  In addition, I did a quick look for you for records for the other names that you mentioned for the civil parish of Rath and Kilkeedy which both adjoin Dysert.  Neither register had a Custy baptism record.

I do note that there was a Thomas Custy family residing in the townland of Knockmore in the 1901 Census.  You can view this link through the Clare library website which is a transcription:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/1901census/dysert_ded_knockmore22_15.htm

The original record is available at this link:  http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Clare/Dysert/Knockmore/1068651/

If you have any questions about any of the above, please let me know.  You might want to include an Ancestor Profile under the XO Chronicles for one of the Custy family.  You can do so through this link:  https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database

    All the best,

    Jane

  • Thank you so much. I'm not sure of all the family relationships because there a very few documents for this family available and the US naturalization papers do not indicate a specific location in Ireland. Some of the information I have came from another family tree and is not documented. I'm trying to find the legitimate sources that will doucment this family, so thank you so much for the information you provided.
