Hello! I would be grateful for any tips to continue my search for parents/siblings of my ancestor Darby/Jeremiah O'Brien from Knockadereen in County Clare. His marriage record (Killaloe Sept 25 1833) names his residence as Knockaderreen (witnesses John and Margaret Hare of Kilcredon). I found a Darby O'Brien listed in Tithe Applotment Books 1828  at Knockaderreen in partnership with Dennis McKeough (maybe a relative?). Jeremiah O'Brien emmigrated to Sydney with his wife Letitia (Roche/widow Crotty) and 4 daughters in 1839.  I cannot find a record of his death in Australia so I don't know his mother' s name. His father's name (according to immigration records) is John and occupation was farmer.  Jeremiah is described as farm servant.   The only other clues I have are on the June 1 1834  Killaloe Parish Baptism record of his daughter Fanny O'Brien (my great great grandmother).  Darby O'Brien and Letice Roche of Knockadereen  had their daughter Fanny baptised with sponsors John Scanlan of Garenboy and Bridget O'Brien of Garenboy - maybe relatives?  Their youngest Irish born daughter (Letticia Brian) was baptised in Youghalarra Tipperary 1836.  According to immigration records Jeremiah O'Brien was born circa 1808. All suggestions gratefully received.  Thank-you Kathryn

  • Hi Kathryn:

Thank you for your query to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome.

I see the marriage record entry (transcription) on the Killaloe parish registers for Darby O'Brien to Letitia Roche who is noted as a widow.

The townland of Knockaderreen is located in the civil parish of O'Briensbridge.  I see that in the Griffith's Valuation that there is no O'Brien surname as an occupier in the townland of Knockaderreen but the McKeogh family is still there.

I also note that you mentioned Youghalarra parish as where Fanny O'Brien was baptised.  This is in County Tipperary but is very close to the Clare border (as O'Briensbridge is close to the Tipperary border).  These two parishes are where you should probably concentrate.  Youghalarra had a number of O'Brien families living there and the townland of Garranboy noted as a residence for the baptism sponsor had a large O'Brien family there (that townland is in the parish of Killaloe!)

Two websites that you will probably find very helpful are:

Clare Library  and here are the links for the civil parish pages which list all genealogical and historical information that they have on file for the respective area:

    Killaloe:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/killaloe_parish.htm

    O'Briensbridge:  http://ww.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/o'briens-bridge.htm

The Tipperary Studies Website has a lot of great Tipperary resources including a very detailed headstone project by parish and you should definitely check out the Youghalarra page.  Here is the website:  http://tipperarystudies.ie/

We do have a few volunteers from the Killaloe/O'Briensbridge area who may be able to add further information to your post.  I will pass this post to them.  There is also a priest in the Youghalarra area who is a great resource for local history information.
