My husband and I will be in Ireland in September; hoping to find places to visit and folks to talk to about my ancestors from Magheracloone, County Monaghan. I’m not done researching on Ancestry.com, but I know they are from this area. My great, or great-great grandfather & great grandmother or great-great grandmother were Owen Marron and Catherine Owens. If nothing else, it will be wonderful to be in the area. Marron Zimmer Keady

Col! You are amazing! Thank you so much for this information. You have inspired me to get off my duff and make sure I have as accurate of names and dates as possible before we get there. These male names are all familiar, since my grandfather’s male siblings have the same names. I know that family names were used over and over, and often times first cousins even shared the same first names; making direct lineage muddied. I will see about using Griffiths Valuation and Irish Census. Once again, THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Hi Marron:
You might check out the terrific Local Studies Centre at the Monaghan Library in Clones. Caitriona Lennon is the person there who will be able to show you the variety of resources available to view there as well as any resources that are online. The link is here: https://monaghan.ie/library/local-history/
You might make contact with them beforehand so that they can have material ready for you when you call in.
Please let us know if there is anything further that you need.
Kind regards,
Jane
