After years of research, I recently located a baptism record for the brother of my 2nd great grandmother, Johanna Ryan.

John Ryan, son of Thomas Ryan and Margaret O'Donnel was baptized in Golden on 12 April 1840. The family residence is listed as Suirville. Johanna, my 2nd great grandmother was born circa 1838 so I would expect to find her baptism record in the same area. I have not been able to locate it yet.

Johanna married my 2nd great grandfather, James Mullen upon emigrating to the US (Newton MA).

This is as close to a real clue as I have been able to find. Every record I have found in archives in the US lists Johanna's place of birth or origin as simply 'Ireland'.

Any help, any assistance in tracking down records of any of these folks would be greatly appreciated.

    First, Suirville is a townland in the civil parish of Relickmurry and Athassel. The corresponding RC parish would be Golden/Kilfeacle.

    I searched the subscription site FindMyPast and located baptismal records for two sisters to John--Ellen and Margaret. See below. Here is a link to the Golden parish register. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0267  You can scroll thru the register and see if you can find Johanna. Note the baptismal records start in May 1833 so there is always the possibility that Johanna was born before May 1833.

    The surname Mullen is mainly a Northern Ireland surname although the surname is also found in good numbers in Galway and Cork. Not many in Co. Tipperary. Likely James is from another county and he and Johanna met in America.

  • Thank you for all that... I've begun scrolling as you suggested. Just one thing however...you mentioned finding baptism records for Ellen and Margaret... but both of the cites above are for Margaret. Can you confirm the information for Ellen? Thanks
