Hello,
i think im related to Bates. i have a Margaret Bates born in Canada-newfoundland.
second son Thomas 1787, is a relative if ive got it correctly
Hi! What else do you know about your Bateses? I haven't come across any reference at all to Newfoundland in my "branch" of Bateses, but stranger things have been known to happen.
What I've got on "my" Thomas isn't much:
Born Jul 10 1787 County Wexford, died Easton's Corners, Wolford Twp, Grenville Co, Ontario
Married Mary Sherwood "Bea" Roe (b 1790 Ireland, d 11 Feb 1871)
I have nothing else on Thomas or Bea.
mine is conjecture from some research from Newfoundland, st. John's by a professor who went through all Irish records there and made notes into database mannioncollection.ca -- the wife is different so my Thomas might be anothr?
it says he was from Lonmel, CLONMEL, Tipperary -- (his daughter Margaret Bates married a Felix (some relatves Phelim) Dowsley from Wexford area - in St. John's town on newfoundland -now canada.
Thomas Bates was born ca 1788 in Ireland. He had one son and two daughters with Anastasia (Anastace) Myers Bates between 1816 and 1820. He died in November 1827 in St John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, at the age of 39. (10 july 1787?). Listed as likely from Lonmel, CLONMEL, Tipperary on mannioncollection.ca
I have Anastasia Myers as his wife. --there is a church record for a thos bates and anstace myers (her mother Alice Myers
there is also a William Gleeson that shows up as sponsor on records
hoping to figure out the ancestry.
thanks
marie
Hi Marie. My Bates' & your Bates' are definitely not connected. My Bates family were absolutely, 100% Protestant and would never have been identified on record as Roman Catholic. They settled in the Eastern area of Ontario - haven't come across any hint of a connection to Newfoundland at all. Sorry I can't help you out on this.
Liisa
My Bates are connected to Dowsley and Wexford, Tipperary and Waterford area.
My family has Church of Ireland with Dowsley and Bragg marrying in Wexford. Then Bates marries Dowsley whose family was
Church of Ireland when they lived in Ireland.
I was surprised to see that my ancestors has various church connections in the past.
