Solomon John Quinlivan is the GG Grandfather of my wife.  He was the son of John Quinlivan b. 1799 and Ann Ryan b. 1808.  Solomon emigrated to the United States aboard the ship Edward out of Limerick, arriving in New York City on 7 May 1849.  According to the passenger manifest, other Quinlivans accompanying him were John, 50 (probable father); Mary, 20 (probable sister); John, 32 (brother?); and Dennis, 28 (brother?).

Solomon settled in St. Louis, Missouri where he married Ann Finn b. 15 Aug 1834 in Ireland.

Solomon's siblings were Johanna b. 23 Mar 1826; Robert b. 4 Apr 1833; Mary b. 15 Aug 1835; and Margaret b. 25 Mar 1839.  Mary also settled in St. Louis where she married Michael E. O'Loughlin b. 15 Aug 1819, Broadford, County Clare.  I have no information regarding his other two sisters or brother.

I have the following questions:

  • From what town did the Quinlivans originate?
  • To what parish did the Quinlivans belong?  They were Roman Catholic.
  • Did Solomon's father, John, return to Ireland?  There is family lore that he did return, and that he died there at the age of 101 on 28 Jul 1901.  John's wife, Ann, supposedly died 1 May 1872 in Ireland.
  • Were John and Dennis (see above) brothers, cousins, or uncles?

Any information regarding my wife's Quinlivan ancestors will be greatly appreciated.

  • Dear WarrenY:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board. I have found a death index record for an Anne Quinlivan who died in 1872 in Ennis.  The details are as follows:

    Name ANNE QUINLIVAN

    Date of Death 1872

    Group Registration ID N/R

    SR District/Reg Area Ennis

    Deceased Age at Death 64

    Returns Year 1872

    Returns Quarter 2

    Returns Volume No 9

    Returns Page No 180

Unfortunately, this record is not yet available to view, but you can order it online through the GRO office.  at this link for 4.00 Euros.  htts/www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/civil-records/help/i-want-to-get-a-copy-of-a-c…;   I could not find any John Quinlivan aged 101 who died between 1900-1910.  However, there is a record for a John Quinlivan aged 93 from Clarecastle who died in 1882 in the Ennis Workhouse.  The record is below.  The Clare Library website is a place that you should look at for parish registers that have Quinlivans in them and whose registers date back to about 1820.  The link is here:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm

Parishes where the Quinlivan surname existed were:  Tulla, Clarecastle, O'Briensbridge, Kilmihil,O'Callaghan'sMills,Kilrush.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

    All the best,

    Jane

  • Thank you for taking the time to reply, Jane.  Unfortunately, I don't believe that particular John Quinlivan is the one I'm looking for.

The good news is that while searching the Clare Library web site, I finally found the parish of Solomon and his family.  The Tulla Baptism Registry by Father's Surname from 1819-1846 lists the baptisms of Solomon, his older sister Johanna, and his brother Robert; and of course it notes their parents John Quinlivan and Anne Ryan.  Delving into other registry files, I found that their Townland was Cutteen More.

Please reference the attached screenshot of the registry, and you'll notice that the Baptism records indicate the Residence of Solomon and Robert was "Tullacrag"; however, I've been unable to find any location by that name.  Have you any thoughts as to where Tullacrag might be within the Tulla Parish?  Would it have been within the borders of Cutteen More?

    Regards,

    Warren

    Hi Warren,

I'm a descendant of Solomon J. Quinlivan, and would really like to talk to you. My email is edlebeau@hotmail.com. We're looking for some of the same things. Plus, I know little about my Quinlivan relations, so would like to talk to your wife and sort out some more of our recent genealogy.
