’I am currently researching my family history. Both my maternal and paternal sides hail from Ireland, with my mother’s family being Lennon and McGoldricks/Goldricks from Belfast and Cavan. My father’s family were thought have come from Galway, with my great grandfather coming to Liverpool in the mid 1800s. His his name was Bartholemew McDonough and he was born in 1852. He married twice, my great grandmother is Catherine Groves, the second of these. Bartholomew's father was Míchéal  (born 1833) We had thought that he came from Galway, but last weekend discovered that he died and was buried in Ennistymon as Michael McDonagh. According to one source, he had been visiting home. His death occurred in 1871. Michael was married to a lace maker, Mary Anne McCartney.

Michael’s father was John McDonough, he was a blacksmith, married to Maria (who in 1891 was living with Bartholemew in Liverpool. My question is was Michael actually from Ennistymon and therefore were our McDonoughs/McDonaghs from Clare, not Galway? Any help would be gratefully received Peter McDonough

  • Dear Peter:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome.

You should definitely check out the Clare Library website for resources on Ennistymon and your McDonough/McDonagh family.  The link is here:

As Michael McDonagh was buried in Ennistymon, it may indicate that he originally came from there and emigrated to Liverpool.
