Hello from Australia. I am the gg grandson of Henry and Mary (nee Harris) Sutton who emigrated to Australia from County Wicklow on 23/3/1852. They had 9 children from Elizabeth b 1820 to Francis b 1848 (my g grandfather). Henry was the son of John and Hannah (neeAllan) Sutton. I am seeking to obtain any information about Calary of the time (eg local history, size, demographics, economy, etc) as well as any information about my forebears, their part in the community, why they left, etc. Also where these C of E Suttons came from, any family history, etc. I am happy to pay for this information if anyone can help. Many thanks in advance. Kind regards, David Sutton

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

This link http://www.newcastleparish.org/calary.htm  provides some background on the parish of Calary.

I also searched the subscription site Roots Ireland and located baptismal records for some of the children but their is a gap between John in 1823 and Thomas Henry in 1847 and I question if the records I located in 1847 1849 and 1851 are from the same family. Not sure why there is a gap. I can only surmise that they moved to a local where the church records are not available or if available not indcluded on Roots Ireland.

I also found a Henry Sutton in the Griffiths Valuation head of household listing which was published for Co. Wicklow in 1854. This Henry lived in Longhill  which is in Kilmacanoge civil parish just to the northeast of Calary. The address of Longhill matches the location on the 1851 baptismal record for Jane. Occupation was mason.

I'm wondering if there were two Henry Suttons in the area?

  • Dear Roger Many thanks for your generous reply. Yes I think there must be two Henry and Mary Suttons, one my gg grandparents and the other the mason, with the children you note above., except for Elizabeth. My Henry and Mary had 9 children, Elizabeth b. 1820 (you note b. 3 Mar 1921), then Hannah b.1824, Henry b. 1829, Alicia b. 1832, Anthony b. 1836, Ellen b. 1840, Isaac b. 1842, John b. 1845 and Francis, my g grandfather b. 1848. Probably they were all cousins...? I would be good to learn anything more about my Henry and Mary. Unlike a mason, I can only guess my ggg was a more humble farm worker than Henry the mason. He obtained assisted passage to Portland, Victoria, Australia with most of his children to work on a property owned by one Willlliam Learmonth, who paid his and his family's fares. They left from Plymouth on 23/3/1832 on the ship Emma Eugenia.

I do have information of the family in Australia. It more their life in Ireland, no doubt tough, that facinates me. Kind regards and many thanks again. David Sutton

  • Hello David,

The above replies should have been helpful in some way. In any case the AN INDEX TO THE PARISH REGISTERS OF DELGANY contains the names of your family members.

What is interesting is that your family is very probably the one associated with John Nelson Darby. Many years ago I wrote a biography on the man who was an Anglican priest active in Calary from 1825-28. When he left his parishioners sent him a letter of thanks for his service among them - dated March 28th, 1829. It is signed, among others, by Anthony Sutton, Janet Sutton and John Sutton. I did have the actual letter while doing researching for a revised edition of my book (still in progress) and made a scan of it. It can be viewed online here:

    https://luna.manchester.ac.uk/luna/servlet/detail/nonconform~91~1~39328…

page 51, but not the reverse side.

A transcript of the same is in my book which is out-of-print, but you can find it in Marion Field’s “John Nelson Darby - Prophetic Pioneer” which is still available.

I’d be happy to send you a scan of the original in digital form.

    Best,

    Dear All

Many thanks for your replies. Very helpful and much appreciated. I am now properly into the (addicative) process of researching on line and writing our Sutton family history, starting in Ireland with Henry and Mary (nee Harris) who had 10 children (Elizabeth through to Francis) and eventually left Ireland in 1852 for Australia. I would dearly like to answer some up-stream questions and am happy to pay if necessary for some good person in Wiclklow to investigate. The main questions I have are as folows. They may be too hard to answer but I would like to try...!:

    1. When did the Suttons leave England for Ireland? Are they on passenger lists, presumably in the 1700s, possibly earlier?
    2. Why did they leave? (Hard question I know but there are many generic push and pull reasons)
    3. Did they settle immediately around Parish of Calary, County Wicklow?
    4. What was their work---presumably agricultural?----and what were their lives like over the few/several generations until 1852?
    5. .Did they lease land or were they working for others? Is the house they lived in still standing?
    6. Any other points of interest----position in the community, church, schooling, etc.
    7. Are there any early photographs? Or images of their township in the 1800s?

I would much appreciate any help or guidance here, including any local historians who may be interested. Clearly I am asking for several days or a week or so of work here and am happy to pay, as I said above.

    Kind regards

    David

To Roger McDonnell------Dear Roger, I trust you saw my appreciation expressed earlier your very helpful contribution. I'm not sure of your normal mode of operation, but I wonder if you would be interested helping me on a paid basis to see if we can answer the questions about Henry and Mary Sutton I posed in an earlier post, or if you know anyone who could? I look forward to hearing from you! Kind regards David

I'm a volunteer on the IRO message boards and don't do any work for a fee,. I actually live in the States. Can I suggest that you contact the Wicklow Family History Centre and see if they can assist. They do charge a fee. Not sure how COVID-19 affects their current availability.
