Hello, I found my grandfather's birth certificate with help from one of your volunteers and received Irish citizenship last year. On Nov 8th I will be arriving in Ireland and traveling to Rathmore in Kerry on the 10th. My grandfather's brothers & parents are most likely buried at St. Josephs in the village. I am hoping to locate other descendents and also see if by chance the building they lived in at Freemount is still there. Wondering if there are any XO volunteers in the area. Maureen Moynihan

Hi Maureen,
I live in a different part of Co Kerry and am not very familiar with the Rathmore area. However, I will try to help if I can. I would need more details about your grandfather though and any other relatives of his that you are aware of and where they lived.
Every good wish,
Joan Holland

Hi Maureen,
I have already started to do some research but needed to know which Moynihans were your ancestors so thanks for clarifying. I will see if I can find any additional information and will get back to you as soon as possible.

Hi Maureen,
My great grandmother was Nora Moynihan (born 1868). Her siblings were Jeremiah (1854), Daniel (1855), John (1857), Nicholas ( 1859), James (1861), Michael (1862), Ellen Nellie ( 1864), Mary (1865), Hannah ( 1866) and another John ( 1866), Nicholas ( 1870) and jeremiah ( 1870) and maybe Maurice though I haven't confirmed him. All siblings (except Maurice) were confirmed by a cousin who still lives in Rathmore. They were all born in Rathmore. Some went to U.S., some to Australia and some stayed in Ireland. I believe their parents were Anna Buckley and Daniel Moynihan ( not 100% confirmed). My great grandmother Nora married Cornelius Hickey and is buried with her son Daniel Hickey over the border in Cork at the Nohoval Lower Cemetery so you may want to look there as well. . As you know, there were several Moynihanfamilies in Rathmore and your names are similar so I'd love to find some connections and confirm my findings.
Have a wonderful trip, I was there for Christmas and it was magic

Kay, thanks for the information on your Moynihan ancestors - it would be interesting to find out if our families are related.
My great-grandparents, Jeremiah & Margaret, would have to have been born in 1842 & 1835, respectively, based on the ages given on their death registrations.
Do you live in Ireland?
Maureenmsm
-
No. I live in the U.S. Nora Moynihans daughter emigrated to Somerville MA in 1925. She is my grandmother. I visited Ireland with my family over Christmas holidays. Any Moynihan information you have would be appreciated as I have not 100% confirmed my great grandmothers parents. All her siblings names match up to birth records to parents Daniel Moynihan and Anna Buckley Moynihan. But it seems there were many Moynihan families in the Rathmore area who have children with similar names so I want to be sure. I'd be happy to correspond by email or share my tree.

Perhaps Daniel Moynihan ( 2nd great grandfather) who would be born in the 1830s or 1840s could be a sibling of your Jeremiah?

Hi Kay,
Just returned from Ireland. Believe XO person sent you my email. Send a message to my email.Hi Kay, will be glad to forward any information I may find that would appear to be relevant. I don't want to put my email in this public forum, have emailed XO asking if there is any way they could privately send my email to you, but haven't heard anything.

Maureen do you happen to be a member of the county Kerry geneology group on Facebook? Members there were very helpful with locating some of my Moynihan family. I would be able to talk with you there.

Hi Maureen,
I visited Freemount yesterday and looked in the cemetery that is at the corner of the townland. There are a number of Moynihans buried there. I have been unable to definitively link them with your ancestors but there are a lot of graves without headstones. A local man told me that he knew of at least two Moynihans who were buried there that aren't named on a headstone. Considering that your ancestors lived in that townland it is very likely that some of them are buried there. When you visit Rathmore next month I could meet you and take you to the cemetery if you so wish, and give you some other information that I have unearthed about the Moynihans of Freemount. In the meantime, I am continuing with my search.
Kind Regards,
Joan

I am Daniel Moynihan from Daylesford Vic Australia. Daniel & Annie Moynihan are my descendants through brothers Maurice and James Moynihan who settled in Victoria Australia. Maurice died on 13 May 1937 and was buried at Rokewood Cemetery in Victoria. James died 25 December 1944 and buried at Cape Clear Vic on 25 Dec 1944.
My connection is my father who was Lindsay Moynihan. His father was Daniel , who is buried at Cape Clear Victoria with many other relatives.
My father was Lindsay , his father was Daniel and his father was James.
My records show Maurice was born 14 Mar 1858 in Shinnagh County Kerry and James was born 12 May 1861 at Shinnagh County Kerry . James had 7 children; Daniel, Ellen, James, Maurice,
Gerald , John & Mary Honora (Nora) . Maurice had 9 children ...Mary, Eliza, Ann, Ellen, Catherine, Daniel, John, Honora, Eliza.
I have on record in a family tree book, that Honora Moynihan, was the 11th child of Daniel & Annie (Buckley) Moynihan.
Hopefully this will be of some help to fill in the gaps. Anne Pitman wrote an updated book of the descendants of
Maurice & James Moynihan in Australia in January 2003. I have a copy of this book if you need any more information.Kind Regards,
Daniel (Danny) Moynihan, Daylesford VIC Australia

Kay,
Just saw your message - I am on Family Search.org and on Ancestry.com. The Ancestry Tree is more complete than the Family Search one. Ancestry tree is named Moynihan-Gauthier-Goulet Family Tree. Send me a message from Ancestry and I'll send you my email.
