My 3rd great grandfather was John Fagan.  According to his tombstone, he was born 17 June, 1792 in the parish of Templeshanbo in County Wexford.  He was a marble cutter by trade.  I have a copy of his last will and testament as well as a letter to his brother.  I have been able to discern that he had a brother named George and a brother named Daniel.  Both of them died in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA, George in 1830 and Daniel in 1849.  John died in Winchester, Virginia, USA on 19 October, 1882.  From the letter he wrote to his brother it seems their mother died in 1809 in Ireland.  So they must have been young when she passed.  John Fagan married Mary Ann Clarke of Ballycastle in 1822 in Philadelphia.  I found a passenger record for a John Fagan who arrived in Philadelphia 31 July, 1822 on the ship Julia Ann.  I also found John Fagan, aged 19, in the 1910/1911 Census or Ireland in Artramon, Co. Wexford.  If anyone has any information on this family I would greatly appreciate it!

  • A belated welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

We are conducting a cleanup operation of older messages that did not receive a response. We apologize that you did not receive a reply last Fall. We have very few colunteers in Co. Wexford.

I did some searching for Fagans on two subscription sites and did not find any records back to around 1800 so likely their parish has records starting much later. The 1854 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing has a John Fagan in Rossard townland in Templeshanbo civil parish. https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/wexford/templeshanbo.htm

As you mentioned there was a John Fagan in the 1901 census age 19 and 11 other Fagans but none appear to be from Templeshanbo parish.

You may want to add John Fagan's story to our XO Chronicles site  https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database

  • I am familiar with this area.    Templeshanbo would have been where the Protestants from Rossard went to church. The Catholics went to Kilmyshall, Bunclody. Bunclody was called Newtownbarry prior to 1953. There are Fagans in Ballycrystal which is part of Ballindaggin parish.  The catholic priest for Ballindaggin is Fr. Jim Fegan. This area of Wexford is in the barony of Scarawalsh. Here is a Fagan who currently lives in the area: https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/officers/RMlj4WCJXHR7ykvmRU2JKFGte9M….

  • Thank you so much!  My daughter and I were in co. Meath for two weeks studying archaeology, then Dublin for a few days about 7 years ago and so close to this area (as opposed to being in America). I wanted so badly to hire a car and drive there, but I have never driven on the opposite side of the road and didn't want to go take the chance! She was only 14 and didn't trust me to do it either. If Americans are ever allowed back into Europe, that will be the first place I go!
