Seeking any information regarding my great grandfather, Patrick McMahon, who was born in Ireland (we believe county Clare) in 1834. He left Ireland and by 1856 he was in Oneida County, New York and married Margaret Bulgar (from Kilkenny Ireland). Through an 1860 census, we believe Patrick's mother might have come to the USA and lived with Patrick. Her name was Brigit or Brigid or Briduet and born around 1800. We know nothing of Patrick's father or siblings or exactly where in Ireland the family originated. On the USA side Patrick and his family moved to Iowa in the 1860s to work in the coal mines. We have done DNA but still having difficulty finding the roots in Ireland. Patrick McMahon died December 1896 and is buried in What Cheer, Iowa. If Patrick named his first son after his father, Pat's father's name could possibly have been John. Thank you for any help!

Thank you so much for your help. I will continue to research. We found one record of a baptism in June 1834 in parish Kilfarboy, Diocese Killaloe. Child's name was Patrick McMahon, mother, Briget Pierce as wife of the father who was named as John McMahon. There is an entry after the name Pierce which I cannot read. It appears to start with letters Mil----22/6 poor..This information came from Catholic Parish Registers. We do not know if this is the Patrick McMahon we are searching for. Again thank you for your quick reply.

Hi P McM: You might consider checking the Clare Library as there are a number of parish registers which have been transcribed on the site. The parish of Kilfarboy is Milltown Malay which is in West Clare. Those registers are transcribed, I believe and they are well worth looking at. The link is here: http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/genealog.htm. You can search using the Civil Parish Index which is located mid-way down the page on the right hand side. The name of Patrick McMahon with a mother named Bridget is fairly common, so you may have a number of searches to go through.
It might be no harm to look at the Censuses in the US where Patrick and his family first settled. You mentioned New York State, and it would be interesting to see who was in the household, who the neighbours were. In addition, you might also look at a naturalization record for Patrick (if one exists) as witnesses may have been relatives and he may have listed his place of origin.
If Patrick's mother Bridget died, where did she die and where is she buried? There may be a headstone that gives the parish information. This was not uncommon as places were often noted on the old headstones. If you need any further assistance, please let us know. The best of luck with your research..
Kind regards,
Jane

Hello Jane Ryan - Thank you so very much for your suggestions. We have no idea when Bridget McMahon died. She was listed in the 1860 census, however, in the 1870 census her name does not appear. Therefore we presume she died sometime between 1860 and 1870. No burial records have been found as yet. I will continue my research and do thank you so much for your help. We have so very little information on the Ireland side. Hoping through the DNA we have provided we can make a diffinitive connection with the Irish roots!

That's not a problem. Please keep us posted on your progress and let us know if there is anything further that we can do.
