Reed family

Hi,  

Getting back before civil registration (circa 1864) is difficult.  Killaliss is a townland in the parish of Knockbride.

Having said that Rootsireland.ie do have some church records that predate that.  It is a subscription site but you can join for short periods. I had a quick look and found the following:

You may find some more there.  I looked at the grave records for Church of Ireland, Knockbride but there was nothing by that name.   It is not a very common name, do search under Reed/Read & Reid.

I also looked at the Flax Growers of Ireland, 1796 - County Cavan on https://www.failteromhat.com/flax/cavan.php and there are 2 names, one each in Drung & Drumgoon, neither would be too far from Knockbride.

There is one entry on Griffiths Valuation on askaboutireland.ie, it is a free site.  Also free to search are the civil records on irishgenealogy.ie

On https://genealogy.nationalarchives.ie you will also find wills & extracts which are also worth a search.

Thank you. JAmes reed was married to a Sarah Ann reed. I do not know the relationship between JAmes and Samuel. Samuel was married to a liberty Weiss born in Ireland and a Louisa born in Scotland. I believe liberty was first. Samuel was an orangeman ( had to look up what that was).  Samuels daughter was born in 1827 or 1828. Samuel Jr was born 1829 to 1830. I do not know what year they came to the United states. But they were all born in Ireland. All the other children where born in New York. One of them married a lady Beresford which is a title ,was said she was a direct descendant of Queen Victoria.  And when she married grandfather her family disowned her. Thinking of visiting Ireland to see where they lived and if there is any family in area.

I grew up not far from the townland of Killaliss but I never heard of any Reed's having lived in the area so I suspect they have long gone from there. In that townland is an orange hall by the name of Billyhill so it is most likely Samuel attended that orange lodge as you mention he was an orangeman. I have made inquiries from someone living in that area and they tell me they know where the Reed's lived in the townland of Killaliss. Next time when I am in that area I will find out exactly where they lived.

If you can get to read the story of Mary Jane Hill Anderson it is very enlightening and outlines Mary Jane's life in Ireland & the USA.
