Thanks for that.

Their children were Margaret 1857, John 1858, Elizabeth 1864, Francis 1868, Mary 1870, Ann 1871, Thomas 1875, Patrick 1876 and Joseph 1877.

They were all born in Scotland.

Looking through the parish records it looks like there are a lot of McKennas in this area.

Do you know if there are any records to show where the family lived or what they worked as?

Irish Census gives addresses & is free on line at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/; 1851 is complete but next is not till 1901

I checked 1851 but no McKennas or McPhillips in Monaghan I'm afraid.

I couldn't find the marriage record on rootsireland.ie so can't tell you where in Ballbay they were married.

Looks like there were / are 4 churches in Ballybay: Second Presbyterean, Christ Church, St Patrick's & Noah's so if you know their religion you could narrow it down
