I am trying to determine if a Hugh Riley born about 1805 from Crosserlough and said to be in the 46th Foot Soldiers during the 1820s and served in Canada is the same as my Hugh Riley born 1802-1805 in County Cavan. I was trying to understand the movements of the 46th Foot regiment through time from 1820-46 but the histories I found seem to say the entire 46th Regiment was in India in the 1840s and my guy was in Canada, married and having children then seemingly starting in 1842 or 43. How long did soldiers serve? Would he have been recruited out of Crosserlough and sent to Canada near Pakenham, Ontario--and then let go of service after a certain term of time? He married Julia Susanna McKernan probably near Cootehill in 1828 or 1829 and had 6 children in Ireland from 1829-1845. The whole family moved to Lanark, Pakenham, Ontario, Canada in 1845-46. I have a lot of info on them after this time. I am only trying to find Hugh Reilly's place of brith and his parents as well as his marriage to Julia Susanna McKernan. Thank you for any help you can give me on him and the 46th Foot Soldiers! Kathy Aho

Hi my name is Edward O'Reilly and I have a Hugh Reilly in my family tree born 1803 in the parish of crosserlough in the townland of Derrylea in Cavan. He became a blacksmith in an neighborhood townland, don't know much more about him but he had a son Hugh who became an RIC constable and have a lot of info on him, but can't see it being related to your Hugh, just the date of birth and the parish being the same, sorry

Hi Edward...just a shot in the dark here, but is there any chance your family tree would have an Annie Reilly, married to Patrick Clarke, with a son John Clarke born March 15th, 1870? I'm trying to find who my great Grandparents are. I've found 4 John Clarkes born in March of 1870, in Cavan or the Cavan adjoining areas. I'm leaning toward Patrick and Annie Reilly (some sites list her as Kelly, Reelly), because they came from Cootehill, Cavan & Monaghan areas. Any advice would be a great help. It's important to me to find my relatives.

Hi Karen,
Edward O Reilly here to answer your questions about an Annie Reilly, yes I have an Annie Reilly born 1907 in Clonosey, Belturbet, Co. Cavan. She emigrated to the USA and married there to a Kelly, she died in 1997. I don't think she is the same lady as your Annie and definitely did not come from cootehill or Monaghan sorry
