Patrick Cassidy, born circa 1806 in County Wexford, later emigrated to St John's, Newfoundland. He named his estate "Ballymoney", a reference to his native Wexford roots.

Did he happen to name his first son Daniel or William or second daughter Margaret or Mary (Irish naming pattern)?

    I checked on ancestry.com - 2nd daughter Mary

Did he leave Ireland before 1833? If not I wonder if this could be him in the Tithe Applotments (free at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/)

    Surname    Forename Townland/Street        Parish     CountyYear

CassidyPatrick Village of Taghmon  Taghmon  Wexford1833

There are no Wexford records in the Irish Censuses until 1851 which has no Patrick Cassidys in Wexford

The R C Parish Registers are free to search at https://registers.nli.ie/ but Ballymoney is only available for Antrim & Derry counties & baptisms don't atsrt til 1853!

  • Many thanks for your quick reply. A Newfoundland newspaper source from 1879 printed his obit: He was a "native of Wexford, Ireland in the 73rd year of his age, 50 of which has been spent in this country" (NFLD, Canada). That would put his emigration to NFLD around 1829. A church record source (also from NFLD) shows his marriage to Ann Phelan in 1830. He's also listed as being a juror in a trial in 1833 in NFLD, so his leaving Ireland and arrival in NFLD seems to be fairly accurate at  around 1829 (give or take a couple years).  As you've noted, he did name his eldest daughter Mary. His first born son, James, named his son William. Since he names his NFLD estate "Ballymoney" I assume this was a nod to his homeland, but as you've noted, that's not in Wexford.

  • My Great, great, great grandfather, a man named John Tynan (who was from New Ross, County Wexford) had a witness for his 1831 wedding to Elizabeth Byrnes (also of New Ross) in St. John's Newfoundland named Patrick Cassidy.  The other witness was a Mary Blake and both were witnesses to the birth of his first child and my Great great grandmother Margaret Tynan.

They may have all known each other in New Ross, or perhaps they became acquainted in Newfoundland.

This is apparently his last will and testament.

Will of Patrick Cassidy from Newfoundland will books volume 5 page 467-468 probate year 1890
