Trying to locate the Stephenson (Steenson?) family in Ballybay, Monaghan,  in 19th Century. Only found one grave at Cahan church. Several immigrated to US, mostly to Michigan, one brother (James) to Philadelphia. Can't seem to find original family in census or tax lists. Any suggestions gratefully received. John Stephenson. • Hi John,

    Here's one from www.rootsireland.ie/:

    Name:John StevensonDate of Birth:not listed
Date of Baptism:13-Mar-1864Address:Edenaferkin, Ballybay Parish, Co. MonaghanParish/District:Ballybay, Church of IrelandGender:MCountyCo. Monaghan
    Denomination:Church Of Ireland
    Father:Joseph Stevenson Occupation:Scutcher Of Flax Mother:Bridget Stevenson

I'm afraid it's the only one - there are no marriages or deaths

Do you know if they were C of I or R C? The R C Registers are free to search at https://registers.nli.ie/; they have baptisms from 1862-81

No luck in Tithe Applotments, Griffiths Valuation or GRONI

  • The tithe applotment records (c 1830) have 3 Steenson households in Ballybay. One in Aughralan (Agheralane), one in Larah and one in Ballybay town. None in Agheralane or Laragh by the time of Griffiths Valuation of 1861.

Nearly all the 200 or so Stephenson/Stevenson/Steenson/Steinson etc families in Co. Monaghan in the 1901 census of the county were either Presbyterian or Church of Ireland (so likely descended from Plantation settlers who arrived in the 1600s, probably from Scotland). Have you checked the church records for Ballybay for baptisms and marriages? The Church of Ireland’s records start in 1812; 1st Ballybay Presbyterian in 1834, 2nd Ballybay Presbyterian 1833; Derryvalley Presbyterian 1816. (Copies of all those records are held in PRONI in Belfast).
