My sister and I are in the process of trying to get our Irish citizenship based on our great grandmother's birth in Drumraney,  I have her baptismal certificate so I'm good on that front but I am looking for clues/relatives regarding her maiden name of McCue and her mother's maiden name of Treacy or Tracy.  Thanks, Geralyn

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Can you tell us your great-grandmother's name and when she was baptized. Not exactly sure what information you are seeking. The 1854 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Drumraney civil parish shows a James McCue in Ballycloghduff townland. There were three Tracey records including two in Ballycloghduff  https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/westmeath/drumraney.htm

Also, I'm not an expert on the Foreign Birth Irish citizenship process but I thought you had to have a grandparent born in Ireland.

  • So, the solicitor is working with us since our mother failed to register us as foreign births. It's a smidge complicated, but yes, it is based on my great grandmother. Her name was Mary McCue, child of Thomas McCue and Margaret Treacy. I have her baptismal record, her civil birth registry, so all is good there. What im looking for is any possible relatives still living in the Drumraney or Athlone area. Ive hit roadblocks locating Mary's parents there, so really just looking for any and all information.

  • Oops. Mary McCue was born in September of 1877 in Drumraney. She had siblings born after her named James, William and Patrick.

I checked the 1901 census for the Drumraney District Electoral District. There were 417 people in the area. None of them had a surname of McCue, McHugh, Tracy or Treacy.

  • Hi Roger, that is what I've been finding. It seems as though my relatives left that area some time around 1886. I know they settled in Jersey City, New Jersey but I think it's odd that there was no one left in that area with either surname. I *think* my great great grandmother, Margaret Treacy McCue may have come from Boyle or the Roscommon area and her birth was around 1855.

  • Roger, would you mind explaining what the Griffiths Land Valuation record is? Does that relate to property value of owned or rented land?

  • Geralyn:

I checked Roots Ireland. There were no Margaret Treacy baptismal records in Boyle.

The Griffiths Valuation survey was conducted from 1848-1864 throughtout the entire country. The survey identified all land lease holders plus land owners and how much land they had.
