Hi,
I am looking for a marriage record for Patrick Hogan b about 1809 County Clare and Catherine O'Loughlin b about 1818. Note: Patrick's birth dates differ with different recorded information. I am using findagrave #159511631 which is the correct Patrick Hogan I am needing Irish records for.
I believe they were married in about 1845 as Patrick was in the East India Company sent to India where 5 of his children were born. He became a sergeant during his time there.
Upon returning to Ireland, Catherine passed away in 1864 Clare, Ireland.
I would like her death record details too please.
Patrick then married Honorah Maloney (b about 1830) in 1864 Clare, Ireland....marriage record please. There is a marriage 10 May 1864 Ennistymon, Clare for a widowed Patrick Hogan aged 42 years. Not sure if this is one I am looking for.
Patrick and Honorah emigrated to Adelaide, South Australia in 1864.
If baptism records can be located for Patrick, Catherine and Honorah also that would be wonderful.
I am hoping to to locate parents for each of them.
This is all I have except for Australian details.
I am very grateful for any information/records that can be located.
Patrick died in 1904 Adelaide, South Australia aged 95 years.
Thankyou,
Katja

  • Hi Katja:

I have attached 2 records for you.  Both are civil records from the Civil Registration records which are available through www.irishgenealogy.ie

The death record is an index record which means that the actual record is not available to view online as yet.  You can order it through the GRO and the address is here:  https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/civil-records/help/i-want-to-get-a-copy-of-a-certificate-what-do-i-do

If you are looking for records for Ennistymon, unfortunately the only publicly available register begins in 1870.  I do note that the marriage that took place was recprded in Kilfenora and it is oossible that baptism records for Patrick Hogan's children may be there.  You can view transcriptions of those records online through the Clare Library at this link:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/places/kilfenora.htm

Based upon the information that you have given, I do see a child baptised in Kilfenora parish register whose parents were Pat Hogan and Kitty O'Loughlin.  You will note that the register has records from 1836 which is quite good.

The Clare Library link that I have given you has a lot of other resources and it would appear that Patrick Hogan was from the Kilfenora parish area.  I would encourage you to look through some of those resources.

Good luck with your research.  Any questions, please let me know.

    All the best,

  • Hi Katja

I am working on a project to identify all the Hogans in South Australia as my mother was a Hogan, the family originally from County Clare.

I may have found your Patrick Hogan.  The record that I have is that Patrick was born in 1809 in Kilfenora, County Clare, Ireland.  He was in military service as Sergeant of Bengal Light Artillery.

Patrick immigrated to South Australia in 1864 arriving at Port Adelaide.  From1865 Patrick lived in an Irish clachan at Baker’s Flat near Kapunda, north of Adelaide.

An occupation that he held in Adelaide was as a Warder Parkside Mental Asylum.

Patrick died in 1904 aged 95 years and is buried in the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide.

I have Patrick’s wife listed as Honoria (Cath) Hogan (nee Maloney).  Honoria was born in 1830 in County Clare.  Like Patrick, Honoria also immigrated in 1864 and lived at Baker’s Flat in 1866.  Honoria died in 1925, aged 95 in Glen Osmond an Adelaide suburb and is buried in the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide.

My records indicate that there were 4 children to Patrick and Honoria all born in South Australia.  I have records that go down another 3 generations to a great-granddaughter who died as recently as 2014.  I have photographs of some of the grave headstones including that of Patrick and Honorias that I am happy to share.

I don’t have Patrick and Honoria’s Irish ancestors so would like to gather that information if you have it.

  • Hi Gerry,
Unfortunately, I don't have Irish records.
I found Ellen Dooley's death notice whilst looking for another Hogan. The address stood out.
I still cannot locate Michael /Patrick Hogan's death. Birth records for Ellen and Michael/Patrick Hogan's children are also not on SA BDM Genealogy site either. There is another child linked to them on the bdm site but haven't been able to reconcile him yet.
It has been a while now since I have looked at the Hogan family line.
Thankyou for the information about Bakers Flat...this is a new part to me.
I have added or edited records on findagrave after researching the various family lines.
My main research started around Mary Theresa Hogan (Ellen and Michael's daughter).
    Happy to share information.
    Have a great day,
    Kind Regards,
    Katja

  • Hi Katja

In your previous communication you were seeking information on a Patrick Hogan b about 1809 County Clare and Catherine O'Loughlin b about 1818 and also that he was sent to India.

I did find a Patrick Hogan b1809 who served in India a Sergeant of Bengal Light Artillery.  He was married to a Honoria (Cath) Hogan (nee Maloney).  Honoria was born in 1830 in County Clare.

In my records, I do have an Ellen Hogan (nee Dooly) born 1849 in Ireland and lived in Adelaide in my records, however I do not have a date of death for her.  Ellen was married to a different Patrick Hogan born 1850 in Ireland and who died in May 1896 in Adelaide, South Australia.  Ellen’s father was John Dooly and Patrick (b1850 in County Clare) Hogan’s parents were Patrick Hogan b1825 died 1904 in Adelaide and Catherine O’Loughlin b1828 in County Clare and died in 1864 in County Clare.  This ties in with your information.

Therefore it seems like there are 2 x Patrick Hogans, the first one born in 1825 and died 1904 in Adelaide and in 1845 married Catherine O’Loughlin b1828 in County Clare who died in 1864 County Clare; and

    The second Patrick Hogan b1809 who married Honoria (Cath) Hogan (nee Maloney);

Might Patrick Hogan who married Catherine O’Loughlin b1809 d1864, then married Honoria (Cath) Hogan (nee Maloney) be the same person?

Patrick and first wife, Catherine O’Loughlin had a son Patrick b1850 who married Ellen Dooly b1849 in Adelaide in 1870.

Patrick and second wife, Honoria’s first child was Michael b1866.

This may be a little difficult to follow but in summary we may have the same Patrick Hogan marrying 2 women; Catherine and Honoria.

    Regards

  • Hi Gerry,
Patrick Hogan b1809 was married to Catherine O'Loughlin and they had five children born in India due to Patrick's being in the Army there.
Upon their return to Ireland in 1864, Catherine died.
Patrick then married Honoria Maloney and then emigrated to Adelaide with the five children. They had four children born in Adelaide.
Ellen Dooly/Dooley married Patrick Hogan and Catherine McLoughlin's son known as Patrick but I believe his birth certificate says Michael.
Ellen and Patrick had two children, Mary Theresa Hogan and John Joseph Hogan.
Mary Theresa Hogan married Uriah Pinnegar and then Carl Emil Olsson.
If you Google findagrave and input memorial ID as 208825832...this will show record of Ellen Daniels with all family members linked so far.
If you scroll down her findagrave record, you will see "created by...." click on this name and my email address will be shown on next screen.
If you send an email, I can forward you Ellen's notices, proving her connection to the family lines.
Look forward to hearing from you soon,
    Kind Regards,
    Katja

    Dear Seapray,

I'm sure you are correct. In my family it was a given that Honoria 'came to Australia on a dead woman's passport'. The story went that Patrick Hogan's wife died just before they boarded the barque 'Rockliffe' in Plymouth on 14 September 1864. That is why, in a document I have, which is suspect is a transcript of the ships manifest, Kate is listed along with Patrick and 5 children.

I have uploaded scans - I hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Damien in Adelaide

  • Hi Damien,
    Thankyou for all your information.
William Hogan who married Margaret Hogan went over to Western Australia and descendants there too.
Do you have Gerald Edwin Hogan's date of birth? No records for him.
    Enjoy your day,
    Katja
