I've recently found out that my grandfathers name is John Vaughan born in 1912 in barrow in furness.. however his father John, grandfather william and great grand father john were from Killaloe County clare. I am very interested to find out more about my family history, its proving quite hard as there are so many john's. Any information would be great. Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Vaughan:

    Thanks for your post.

There has been some great transcription work done by Jeff for the Clare Library website, and you should check out the parish registers associated with Killaloe.  The link for them is here:  http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/don_tran/bmd/baptism_records_killaloe_1828-1881.htm

I would recommend that you work backwards to try to narrow down what Vaughan family you are associated with.  You state that your grandfather, John was born in Barrow, but that his father and grandfather's names were John and William respectively.  I would recommend taht you search for a John Vaughan baptism record with a father named William.

It is possible that John Vaughan (your great-grandfather) may have been born after 1881 in which case you would need to check out the Civil Registration records which are free and online.  The link is here:  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/civil-search.jsp&n…; You can input the Registration District as Limerick as Killaloe parish falls within that area.

I will also pass this query to Jeff who may be able to add further information as he is quite knowledgeable with the registers.

Many thanks for your interest in Ireland Reaching Out.

    Stay safe.

    All the best,

    Jane
