Hi, I have just last Friday had a breakthrough!!  from another source that confirms that my 2x Gt Grandfather John emigrated via England arriving January 1840 in New Zealand. From this & a DNA match I now know that the family I am looking for is John 1809, James 1804, & possibly Mary 1806 O'Brien/O'Brian children of Charles O'Brien & ? (born abt 1785)  in Co. Mayo. Parishes from the records I have are Turlough/Ballina, Kilmoremoy, and/or Aglish/Castlebar. Families associated by marriage are McDonaugh and O'Neill.

Any help or pointers very much appreciated.

Thankyou

Brian

  • Hi Brian,

Good to hear of your breakthrough and apologies for the delay in getting back to you - I had a computer crash!

The Tithe Applotments (free online) 1823-37 have no O'Brians but 11 O'Briens in Mayo - but none of the first names or parishes you mentioned I'm afraid.

Griffiths Valuation 1846-64 (done in Mayo 1856-7) has no O'Brians in Mayo but 7 Charles O'Briens but once again none in your parishes.

    Better luck with John:

No luck with James or Mary

No luck in the Irish Censuses 1821, 41 or 51 with either name

I don't have a subscription but a site you may want to try is rootsireland.ie/. You can search on the main page. There is a one day subscription for 15 Euro

  • Hi Col, Thankyou for your efforts, much appreciated. Every little bit helps!! I hope that your computer is behaving itself now with no long term issues.

I had to replace mine not so long ago, they can be very frustrating as we've learned to rely on them a lot.

    Kind Regards & Thanks again
