I'm researching a couple who married in 1858 in Broadford Roman Catholic parish, and their residence was listed as "Newtown" in the marriage register. Their witnesses were also from Newtown. Does anyone know where that was/is located? The closest Newtown I've found on Griffith's valuation (1852) was in Kiltenanlea civil parish, but that would've been in Doonass/Truagh Roman Catholic parish I believe. Was there another Newtown within the boundaries of Broadford parish?

Thank you! I think that must be it. I don't see the surnames of the couple I'm looking for, but I don't think they grew up in Newtown so that's not surprising. I was hoping to find them in Newtown on Griffiths Valuation since that was much closer to their 1858 marriage date, but I looked through all the Griffiths pages for Killokennedy parish and didn't find Newtown. Do you know why that might be? Were there townlands that were excluded from Griffiths or whose records haven't survived?

Hi Megan,
Please see attached. Apparently Broadford or Killokennedy parish were re-arranged.
The "Newtown" you are seeking may be in the parish of O'Callaghan's Mills, Civil parish of Killuran.

That's interesting, thanks. Unfortunately I'm not seeing the "right" surnames on this Griffiths Valuation either. The 1858 marriage was between Michael Carey and Sally Curley of Newtown, witnessed by Denis and Mary Sheedy also of Newtown. None of those surnames is on Griffiths for Newtown in Killuran parish. Sally Curley was probably living with her father at that time, and I know he was in Finlea in Killaloe parish. I can't figure out where the Careys came from though. The search continues!
