I'm looking for information on Michael Golden (1780-1879). He was married to Mary Dougher? or Walsh? (1790-?). They had eight children; Michael (1828-1892), Patrick (1828-1902), Anthony (?-1850), Martin (?-1850), Catherine (?-?), Dennis (?-?), John (?-?), and Mary (?-?).
They were from the parish of Kilfian.
After the mother died the adult children moved with their father to America in 1845, settling for a short time in Pennsylvania. Anthony and Martin were killed working in the mines and then the remaining family members moved to Polktown Township, Ottawa County, Michigan near Dennison.
I'm looking for any information about births, baptisms, marriages, or really anything that tells me more about them.

Thanks,
John Golden

  • Hi John,

My family also comes from Kilfian Parish.  Here are the Goldens listed in the 1854 Griffiths Valuation for Kilfian Civil Parish, it is likely one of these men were related to your ancestor:

Golden Anthony, Sr. Belladooan Kilfian Mayo
    Golden Anthony Belladooan Kilfian Mayo

    Golden Thomas Belladooan Kilfian Mayo

(my guess is that for the above, Anthony would have been the father, with sons Antyony Jr and Thomas)

    Golden James Treanagh Kilfian Mayo

    Golden Daniel Rathnamagh Kilfian Mayo

However, if I look at the tithes from 1832, I found a MIchael Golden living next to a Dogher / Dooher family in Ratheskin.

Ratheskin and Belladoan are next to each other, making it likely that the Goldens were all related.

Kilfian parish records are here: https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0749

I'll have another look tomorrow what I can find, but I think it is likely your family comes from Ratheskin.  My great great grandfather lived next to yours in Kincon, and his Uncle Patrick Loughney lived in Ratheskin in 1798.  It is likely that the father of your Michael Golden was caught up in the 1798 Rebellion when the French landed at Kilcummin Harbor. For a good account of that, you may like to read "The Year of the French" - you can find it on Amazon.

    best regards,

    John

  • My great-great grandfather was Thomas Golden, born in the early 1830's, who I believe was from Ratheskin, Kilfian, Co. Mayo.  He arrived in the U.S. in 1851 and settled in Hawley, PA, a small town about 20 or so miles east of Scranton.  He worked as a bargeman on the Delaware and Hudson Canal which ran through Hawley at the time.  My great-great grandmother was Bridget Manley who arrived in 1852 and I believe she was from Crossmolina.  They, along with my great-grandparents, Michael Golden and Mary Ellen Hughes, and my grandparents, Thomas Golden and Angela Gerety, are buried in the Queen of Peace Cemetery in Hawley.

  • Hello!  My great-great-great grandfather was also Thomas Golden, although apparently not the same Thomas Golden listed above.  I do not know if this is an appropriate place to post this inquiry as I have no idea what parish or county he is from.  Family history says he was a McGoldrick (or similar spelling) before emmigrating to the US.  The first documentation I have is his marriage to Marcella Byrne in Sept 1849 in Lockport, Niagara County, NY.  They had several children before moving to Erie, PA around 1869.  He died in Erie in 1888.

His wife Marcella Byrne was also born in Ireland, in 1830.  She emmigrated to the US in 1845 (when she was 15).  I believe her mother may have remarried a Summers.  After Marcella's death, her maiden name was listed as Summers instead of Byrne on children's death certificates, etc.  Witnesses/Sponsors for their marriage and some of the children's baptisms were Maria and Mary and/or Marg (Margaret) Summers.  I am guessing this is her mother and/or a half sister.  They could have emmigrated from Ireland through Canada.  Marcella died in Erie, PA in 1903.

Their children were: John 1850, Mary G Golden (Boyd) 1852, Thomas Joseph Golden 1854 - 1934 (my great-great grandfather), James 1856, Hubert Joseph 1857 - 1893, Marcella 1859, Ellen "Nellie" Golden (McLaughlin) 1866.  All were born in Lockport, NY except Nellie who was born in Erie, PA.  They all lived and died in Erie until my grandfather and his parents moved to California in the 1920s.

I realize this is all very vague information, but I have been looking for the place of birth and parent names for Thomas and Marcella for many years, so I keep posting in case there is someone out there that can provide a clue.

I appreciate any information you can give.

    Thank you,

  • Kim,  If you have an Ancestry.com account, a user named golden1216 has a tree containing information on Thomas and Marcella.  That user also has a tree called "Parks" that has only one person, who is living.

If you do not have an account, I can send you an invite to my research tree where I have included some of that information.  DNA testing has shown several matches that go back to both Rathlacken Goldens and Kilfian Goldens.  (See www.goldenlangan.com). Some of those matches are in this thread (jtgolden and Loughney).

Golden is likely up the line from my maternal 2nd great grandfather Thomas Langan, born in Ratheskin around 1810. His wife was Bridget Hoban, who appears to have Ruddy ancestors.

  • Hi Steve,

Thank you so much for your reply and for the information!  My Ancestry user name is golden1216 and my tree with information about Thomas and Marcella is Golden/Tufford Family Tree.

I visited www.goldenlangan.com a few months ago and found a link to a Golden YDNA chart https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Golden?iframe=ycolorized.  That chart contains the names Thomas Golden, c1820-c1890 (likely my 3x great grandfather) and Hubert Joesph Golden, b 10 May 1857, d 30 Dec 1893 (my 2x great grand uncle with exact dates).  That chart also contains a few McGoldricks.  My grandfather told us that the name was McGoldrick before Thomas came to the US.  I contacted Marie Kerr (she had the chart made from her father's YDNA) and she graciously shared some of her family history with me.  Based on what she told me and the information on goldenlangan.com, I built a test tree called Golden/Test but I could not find a connection to my tree.  Eventhough I have been researching my tree for 15 years, I have only just done my DNA.  It came back inconclusive and I am waiting for them to send me a new test.  It will be interesting to see what information my matches will provide.

    Thanks again!
