Hi,
I hope you can assist me to locate records of parents of my 2nd great-father Michael Quirke. Michael was baptised Sept 1810 in Tipperary parish, Co.Tipperary, parents recorded as Peter Quirke and Jane Kearney in the attached baptism register page (source National Library of Ireland; Dublin, Ireland; Microfilm Number: Microfilm 02488 / 01, and Ancestry.com).
Michael Quirke married Elizabeth Brophy on 22 Feb 1838 in Ballingarry parish, Co.Tipperary, and one of their sons Michael Quirk b. 26 Sept 1844 migrated to Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, where Quirk descendents settled in Melbourne and in New Zealand.
I also located the attached baptism records of four siblings of Michael Quirke, that is Catherine Quirke 13 Dec 1812, Anstice Quirke 10 Dec 1815, Bridget Quirk 29 Jan 1819, and John Quirke 11 Feb 1822, in same location and with same parents named as Michael Quirke (source National Library of Ireland; Dublin, Ireland microfilms, and Ancestry.com). Some records with or without "e" on Quirke.
I have searched without success for birth and marriage the records of parents Peter Quirke and Jane Kearney in NLI, IrishGenealogy, Ancestry.com. and Family Search.
Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards
Brendan Quirk

Hello Brendan,
I am very interesting in following and hopefully contributing. But right now our great grandson is visiting. His parents gave him the middle name Quirk
as a wonderful way to honor me, so I better not be working genealogy today.
On My Heritage I matched a woman who is the daughter of a Margaret Quirk. Their Quirks went from Tipp to NZ.
Ireland Reaching Out connected my family to the missing names and graves of my 3X great grands Quirke. So I congratulate you on chosing the best place to find your Co Tipp family.
Regards,
Mary Quirk-Thompson

Brendan:
I searched on the subscription site FindMyPast.ie and did not see the marriage record for Peter and Jane. Likely they married 1809 or earlier based on when Michael was baptized. Baptisms for that parish start in July 1809 and it is possible there were earlier children. Marriages for Mullinahone parish start in February 1810 so earlier records likely were lost. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0277 I would also note that marriages normally occurred in the bride's parish and that parish if not Mullinahone may not have records back to the early 1800s.
I did search for a Peter Quirke baptismal record with no success. I presume he was born 1790 or earlier. For Jane Kearney the only record I located was in Carrick on Suir parish and the name was Joan Kearney baptized in January 1786. Parents were Pat Kearney and Mar Shee (as transacribed). Carrick on Suir is two parishes south of Mullinahone. Here is a link to the parish register. The record in question is on the right side of the page. https://registers.nli.ie//registers/vtls000632153#page/30/mode/1up
I also found the five baptismal records that you mention in your message.
I checked the Tithe listings and there were no Peter Quirk/Quirke records in Co. Tipperary.

Hi Roger,
Thanks a million for trying. Peter Quirke is elusive and perhaps a birth record from abt 1790 no longer exists. I will widen my search as you suggest to nearby parishes including the trail of Joan Kearney in Carrick on Suir. There are many such names and variants which are challenging! I have been learning about Irish name variants.
Although no sign of our Peter Quirke in Griffiths Valuations, I can see references to Michael Quirk and John Quirk in Mullinahone in Ancestry's Ireland, Griffith’s Valuation, 1848-1864, but don't know if they are Peter and Jane's sons. Of interest is that Michael Quirk who was baptised in 1810 in Mullinahone, married Elizabeth Brophy on 22 Feb 1838 in Mohober Townland, located between Ballingarry and Mullinahone parishes.
Would you be able to throw light on the death records in Co Tipperary for Michael Quirk and Elizabeth Brophy? Although they remained in Ireland, their five children all migrated to Victoria, Australia where they married and had families.
With grateful thanks, Roger
Hi Mary,
Thank you for showing interest. Yes, many Quirk(e)s left Tipperary and other places for NZ and Australia especially in the mid-1800s, some chasing gold. I had a look through my Quirk(e) family research and cannot see a Margaret Quirk linked to the Quirks mentioned above. I have met many Quirks in New Zealand and it is possible that some descended from others who settled firstly in Australia, then over here in NZ. Let me know about your Margaret Quirk's line.
Kind regards, Mary

Brendan:
Civil registration of deaths started in 1864. Records are available on the free sitewww.irishgenealogy.ie For deaths from 1864-1870, there are only index records are for deaths from 1871-1970 we have the actual images. We expect that the images for 1864-1870 deaths will be added in the near future.
Based on the townland you provided, Michael and Elizabeth were in the Callan registration district. I did a search and for Elizabeth there is an 1865 index record for an Elizabeth Quirke who died in 1865 at age 47. I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and found more detail. This Elizabeth was married and lived in Mullinahone, died from pulmonary consumption and the informant was a Bridget Smith. Not sure if this record is for your Elizabeth. For Michael Quirke, there was an 1869 record for a Michael Quirke who was 71. This Michael was a widower from Mullinahone and the informant was Bridget Quirke. The age appears to be off if Michael was born in 1810.

Hello again Brendan,
Quirke Wall Tipp to NZ Family Tree relative based on My Heritage matches owner Mary Quirk-Thompson
https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/tree/168669042/listofallpeople?row…
Names on my tree mostly copied from an Ancestry done for my DNA match CK her initials not the name on her test at My Heritage.
I have a letter from the 1860 from a Quirke priest cousin to my 3X great uncle Edm Quirk in Galveston TX reminding the elderly Edm that his brother William’s son and daughter married a daughter and a son of Edm’s old friend Ned Wall. My My Heritage match CK descends from a Quirke Wall marriage. Whenever I say to myself this is a stretch I remind myself that CK shares DNA with me and my first cousins. With me 30 cMs, mt dau Patti, my 1 C 29 & my 1C2R 11.
CK who works on her family tree was gifted with the test. I messaged her the day the match arrived. I never got a reply thru the safe messaging system at My Heritage. Her lifelong friend has a tree up for CK at Ancestry. She contacted CK who said she has no interest in contacting me. After I put up a copy of the friend’s tree at Ancestry, I contacted every person who had an Ancestry tree which included CK’s family. None descends from Quirke.

Brendan,
Re: the Tom Walls on CK's family's tree: The 1864 letter from the Rev Wm Quirke to his cousin my 3X great uncle, said that Tomy Walls married my 3X great uncle Wm Quirke's daughter. Therefore I know that Tom is a first name in the Ned Wall family. m
