I have posted in the past but have not found any new information on Terence so decided to try again. His marriage records and cemetery stone indicate he was born in County Cork c. 1840. He joined the British Army in Fermoy as a boy drummer in 1854, married Margaret Kelly in Montreal, Canada in 1866, and left the army in 1868 without a pension. When he was discharged from the army, the books show he was born in Fermoy.
At the time of his marriage in a Catholic church, his parents were listed as John Butler and Catherine Leary (deceased) of County Cork. I have gone through the Catholic parish records for Fermoy and surrounding areas but have not found his birth or a marriage for his parents. A search of all Ireland records on Roots Ireland hasn't shown any results for me either.
I am wondering if some records are held locally and not accessible on line.
I have found a John Butler and Cat(h)e Leary as witnesses at an 1839 marriage in Innishannon and as parents of a Mathew Butler in Schull West in 1829. I have no idea if Terence had any siblings and Innishannon and Schull are some distance from Fermoy as far as I know.
Thank you for any help or insight anyone can offer.

Susan:
Like you, I searched Roots Ireland and www.irishgenealogy.ie and came up with no clear leads. Many times emigrants would list the nearest big town and their home place on a form rather than the small townland they came from so possibly Terence did that when he completed his forms. The parish to the north of Fermoy is Glanworth/Ballindangan and their baptismal records start in 1836. I know Terence enlisted as a drummer boy in 1854 but possibly he was baptized in 1835 or earlier in Glanworth and the record would not be available.
Roots Ireland has records for Fermoy starting in 1827/1828 and I doubt there are earlier records.
Have you considered a DNA test? You may get matches on your Butler/Leary line.

Thanks Roger. We corresponded on some of my previous posts. I have had a DNA test along with some of my relatives.
I just thought that perhaps there were some local records kept at a church that might contain births and marriages. Terence's age throughout census records in Canada is pretty consistent over the years and he seems to have been born around 1840.
Thanks for the above suggestion.
