Hello,
My name is Jayen and I'm looking for the ancestors of my great great grandmother, Johanna Harrington (married name Donnelly). Her parents were Jermiah Harrington and Margaret Quill and they lived in Castletownbere parish before immingrating to Charleston, Boston, Massachusetts, America.
I'm a little confused because I can't find a parish named Castletownbere so I hope I have today's parish correct.
There is a short, full report below but the highlights of the Irish section are here. All children married in Charleston after immigrating. Spouses and marriage dates:
- Johanna to Patrick Donnelly (they move to New York City where they livedand his occupation was a NYC policeman) 30 June 1863
- Patrick to Julia Murphy 1854
- Margaret to De4nis Moynihan 1869
- Julia to William Shannon 1869
- ******************************************************
Baptisms for five children of Jeremiah Harrington and Margaret Quill were located in Castletownbere parish, County Cork, summarized information is below. The township would have been Bulisky? or any of its spellings.??
Patrick, baptized 27 March 1831, address Bulisky, sponsors Jeremiah Neil, Mar Rohan
Margaret, baptized 28 April 1833, address Bullusk, sponsor Margaret Quill
Johanna, baptized 19 Sep 1836, address Bolesk, sponsors John Launey & Catherine Neil
Catherine, baptized 13 Oct 1839, address Ballard, sponsors Timothy Casey & Johanna Quill
Julia, baptized 14 Jan 1842, address Bullesk, sponsors Denis Shea & Mary Cahalihan
(Catherine is not listed in America so assumed she died before reaching adulthood)
- During this time period, there are many Harringtons (Patrick, James, John, Denis), there are no Jeremiahs. These records show 4 Jeremiah Harringtons occupying land in the whole county of Cork, 3 of them in Killaconeagh parish. One of the 3 may be the Jeremiah of this family.
- There are also no Quill’s in the parish. The nearby parish of Kilcatherine, also on the Bear Peninsula, shows Quills listed in the Tithe.
- The researcher concluded that of the three Jeremiah Harringtons listed in the Tithe records, he is either the one residing in the townland of Gortagraffer, or his holding was so small that he is not listed at all. Jeremiah and his family could have been residing with family member.
- Considering Irish naming traditions, it’s likely that Jeremiah’s father was named Patrick, and there is a Patrick listed in the townland of Felane Middle (written as WHILANE in the tithe record) The holding consisted of 230 acres and was described as a “mountain”.
- Death records for Ireland begin long after Patrick and his sisters had arrived in the United States. It’s probably safe to assume that an event such as the death of their parents prompted the siblings to emigrate. There are numerous death records for Jeremiah Harringtons in the area of Castletownbere from 1864-1880, some are even a plausible age.
Well, if anyone recognizes any of this information in their own ancestry or can direct me to a good source to do further research, I would appreciate it. I would like to visit the area this year and any info I have ahead of time would help narrow them down in this great crowd of Harringtons:)).
Thanks.
Jayne

Jayen:
We generally have our parish pages based on the civil parish so you correctly selected Killaconenagh parish. Castletownbere is the RC parish.
Here is a link to the RC parish of Castletownbere https://www.dioceseofkerry.ie/parish/castletownbere/
Your researcher, Lisa Dougherty, did an excellent job researching your family. I had come up with the same five Harrington children.
As Lisa indicated, Jeremiah and Margaret likely died before 1864 when civil registration started. From 1864-1870 we currently only have access to index records and from 1871 on the full records. These records are available on the free site www.irishgenealogy.ie There are a few possibilities in the 1864-1870 period but you will have to wait for the records to be made available online.
I don't believe we have a volunteer near Killaconenagh parish. Have a great trip!

Hi, Roger,
Thanks for the confirmation work on the research and the parish link. Yes, Lisa is an excellent guide on the twisty paths of Irish ancestry (unlike my well-organized Swedish ancestors).
I will explore the www.irishgenealogy.ie site for any clues. Do you have any idea when those civil registration records 1864-1870 will be available?
Best regards,
Jayne

It seems we have been waiting for them for at least three years. Can't explain the delay probably lack of staff.

Hi Jayne, myself and my wife bought a house in Gortgarriff 2 years ago and we have since found out it was owed by a Jeremiah Harrington in 1852. It is a 100 yards from kilcatherine Church on the castletownbere haven peninsula in the parish of kilcatherine.
The Church cemetery contains many Harringtons and maybe Jeremiah is one of them, we will have a walk down to it and see what we can find! Hope we can help

Hello Neil and Gill,
That would be lovely of you to do that. I'm not sure it would be the Jeremiah Harrington I'm related to but you never know! I've had the oddest way of making contacts before. This wouldn't surprise me.
Thank you. Enjoy the walk as well.

Hi Jayne,
Lily here. We have a Jeremiah Harrington, not same dates but potentially a relation as it is an unusual name. Our Harringtons are from Muintervara, Beara Peninsula, specifically also called Keelovanogue Harringtons point. Also search for Durrus and Kilcrohane.
I know that quite a few emigrated to Boston.
Here is a family tree, potentially one of Daniel Harringtons siblings lines?

Hope this helps.
Best wishes,

Hi, Lily,
It's hard to tell because I have no info on Jeremiah's siblings. the genealogist who helped me thinks the parents Jeremiah and Margaret may have died before the children emigrated because there is no mention of them in the U.S. or on passenger lists. I also noticed that your Jeremiah died in the U.S.
I will be working more on the Boston line.
There probably is a connection there but way back. Or cousins of some sort. The Irish seem to have cousins all over the place:).
Certainly enough Harringtons in your family!
best regards, Jayne
