My husband’s family lived on Lower Mount Pleasant in Dublin at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries.  I am not sure which parish includes that address.  I am also wondering if the family originated in county Louth, primarily because the Mathews/Matthews surname appears with such frequency.  Thank you.

The official name for Lower Mountpleasant is 'Lower Mountpleasant Avenue', it's located just west of Mountpleasant Square between Ranelagh and Rathmines - see the c1935 Map Extract attached.. parts of this this area between Ranelagh and Rathmines is known as just 'Mount Pleasant' or 'Mountpleasant'.

The civil parish for this area would have been St. Peter's, it's a very large parish covering parts of the city, i.e. inside the Grand Canal in addition to Rathmines, Ranelagh and part of Harold's Cross. The Catholic parish was most likely Rathmines depending on the exact dates.

If you have some additional details on your Matthews family, and they were still in Ireland at the time, a good place to start your search would be with the 1901 and 1911 census - if they can be found on these the forms should give ages relationships County of birth etc. Mountpleasant is listed under the Rathmines & Ranelagh DED on the census returns. I had a quick look for any Mathew/Mathews/Matthews in the area on the 1901 census and found about 50 in the area - including an  Emma B. Matthews age 81 on Mount Pleasant Avenue born Co. Louth (Upper & Lower listed together in 1901), and a Maria and Henry Matthew (born Cork and Offaly) on Mount Pleasant Square.

If you have any questions or require some assistance finding census or BMD records for your Matthews family on the census let me know ...

  • Thank you very much! I also just learned that my husband’s branch of the Mathews family did indeed originate in county Louth. However, his grandfather’s family lived in Dublin for decades; several Mathews antecedents, as well as those bearing the maternal family surnames Farrell and Cowan, are interred at Glasnevin.   We will use the sources you suggest to see if we can learn more.
