Hello,

I'm researching my 4th great grandfather, Michael Sullivan, who emigrated with his wife (Honora Hogan) and five children (John, Margaret, James, Catherine and Thomas) to Canada as part of the Peter Robinson Project in 1825.  Other descendants of Michael Sullivan indicate they have family records that show Michael Sullivan was born in 1791 in Clonmel, County Tipperary to John Sullivan and Lois "Kitty" Russell.  However, although I have a rootsireland.ie subscription, it does not appear to cover 1791 for the two Catholic parishes in Clonmel.  Does anyone know where I could find records from this location and time period, to see if I can find a baptismal record for Michael Sullivan?

Note also that I've found on rootsireland.ie the following records, all from Killenaule Parish, County Tipperary: (1) a baptismal record for Honora Hogan dated 17 Sep 1794; (2) a marriage record for Michael Sullivan and Honora Hogan dated 15 Feb. 1813; and (3) baptismal records for all five children.  I've also found a baptismal record for a Michael Sullivan baptized in Killenaule Parish on 15 Mar 1793 with parents John Sullivan and Margaret Cormick, as well as baptismal records for both a John Sullivan (1768) and a Margaret Cormick (1773) in Killenaule Parish. I note further that a Catherine Cormick was the baptismal sponsor for Michael Sullivan's oldest child, John.  Based on that, I think it's possible the information of some of Michael Sullivan's descendants about the year (1791 vs. 1793) and location (Clonmel vs. Killenaule) of his birth and the name of his mother (Lois/Kitty vs. Margaret) could be incorrect, but I don't want to conclude that without being able to check records from the Clonmel parishes to see if there was a Michael Sullivan baptized there in 1791 with mother Lois/Kitty Russell.

Thank you for any help!

The index for the St. Mary's Clonmel parish register indicates that baptismal records are not available for 1791-1792. This may explain why you can't find a record for Michael Sullivan. Records for St. Peter's start in 1836.  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/1102

  • Thank you, Roger.  I appreciate your help.  Does that mean the records don't exist, or just that they're not available online?
