Sligo Workhouse

The Sligo Poor Law Union was officially declared in 1839. The Workhouse was opened in 1841 at a cost of £11,000. It was built to house a maximum capacity of 1,200 inmates. The Sligo Workhouse was built to accomodate people from the areas of Ballintogher, Ballymote, Ballynakill, Ballysadare, Carly, Carney, Cliffony, Cloonacool, Cloonaghill, Coolaney, Coolooney, Dromard, Drumcliff, Drumfin, Lissadill, Kilmacowen, Knocknarea, Riverstown, Rossinver, Skree, Sligo, Templeboy, and Tobercurry.

In 1922, after the formation of the Irish Free State, the Sligo Workhouse was repurposed as the county home. Today it is called St John's Community Hospital with very few of the original features surviving.

Further information about the Tuke Scheme may be available here: https://www.historyireland.com/18th-19th-century-history/james-hack-tuke-and-his-schemes-for-assisted-emigration-from-the-west-of-ireland/ I do not see any reference in this article to County Sligo. There is also a blogger who is researching the scheme through the Galway County Council and the website blog is here: http://ionaddeirbhile.ie/deirbhiles-blog/assisted-emigration-blacksod-bay-the-tuke-f Again, there is no reference to Sligo, but if you believe that your ancestors availed of the Tuke Scheme, the above links are worth having a look at.

Great general knowledge stuff like google, but no lists to search. Though poorhouse records are past 100 years ago, no access or links to inmates, etc. No way of searching inmate records though supposed to be valable. Tuke schème for immigration was available for mayo and Sligo. Lists were made but are not available for searching. Many errors and omissions have been noted on what is available.
