Moses Nolan was born abt. 1823 in Ballindaggin, Templeshanbo, Wexford Ireland to Andrew Nolan/Nowlan and Elizabeth. It is believed he had two siblings, Morgan Nolan and Elizabeth Nolan who had emigrated to Canada earlier than Moses and lived in the Ottawa, Ontario area.
He came to Canada at the age of 26 years to teach at S.S. No. 4 OS School, arriving sometime before 1859. He boarded at the log home of Nicholas “Nick” and Suzanne/Susan (nee Whelan) Turner, who both had emigrated from Wexford as well. Their home was on Lot 15, Concession 4, Herberts Corners, Osgoode Township, Carleton County, Ontario Canada and the school was about ¼ mile from the house on land the Turner’s donated.
Moses took a great interest in Nick and Susan’s eldest daughter Elizabeth and according to “oral family history”, Nick was none too pleased and would not give permission for them to marry, but marry they did on January 9, 1862 in St. John the Evangelist Church, Osgoode Township, Enniskerry, Ontario and Witnessed by Patrick Herbert and Bridget Nolan/Nowlan.
Following their marriage, they moved to 104 Murray Street in Ottawa, Ontario, about 50 miles from Osgoode. Moses never taught school again, but did teach privately, some Ottawa business men. He also was a bar operator for a while; a hotelier and boarding house keeper. I believe their home at 104 Murray Street was their boarding house, but they later moved to 13 Murray Street. Both properties have since been demolished.
Moses and Elizabeth had six children:
1) Andrew (b.1862 CAN-died in USA), left home at an early age
2) Elizabeth “Lizzy” (1864-1942) & never married
3) John Patrick (1867 Ottawa-1895 Ohio USA), Steamboat Purser
4) Morgan Thomas (1868-1872), died age 3
5) Peter Morgan (1874-1890), died from injuries in an accident
6) Patrick James “P.J.” (1878-1941) [Notes: Patrick "P.J." Nolan was educated at the LaSalle Academy, University of Ottawa, and, in 1899, graduated from the Ontario College of Pharmacy. Establishing his own business, he became quite well-known and is reputed to have been the first druggist in Ottawa to win the Gold Medal awarded by the Ontario College of Pharmacy. During his 30 years as a druggist, he also ventured into the entertainment field, the construction and real estate business and into politics. By 1914, he owned several theatres and, from there, branched out into the construction and real estate business, eventually acquiring or constructing more than 100 properties. In 1922, he made his first entry into politics serving as an Alderman for the city of Ottawa from 1922 to 1924. After a couple of unsuccessful attempts (1927 and 1928), P.J. was elected Mayor of Ottawa on a third attempt in 1934 and again in 1935.]
