The 1861 census for England lists John & Jane living at 5 Tavern Crt, Tower Hamlets, Bromley St Leonards, Middlesex. John is a Blacksmith's labourer aged 40 and born Ireland. Jane is a boot binder aged 28 and born Middlesex, London. They have children: Bernard aged 5, Denis aged 3 and Ellen aged 2. All are born London, Middlesex.
The 1871 census for England lists John and Jane living at 13 Charles Court, Tower Hamlets, Bromley St Leonards, Middlesex. John is listed as aged 49 born Cork, Ireland. His occupation is listed as 'hammerman'. Jane is aged 39 born Shadwell, Middlesex. Her occupation is given as 'dressmaker'. Living with them are their children:

- Dennis aged 14 & born Bromley, Middlesex, occupation 'glass blower'.

It appears that John may have died in 1902 in Poplar.
