Denis O'Connor 1831

Back to List

Denis O'Connor was a schoolmaster at the National School in Ballyquin. He married Hanora Houlihan in 1862 and the family moved to Cloghane. The marriage cert did not refer to the names of any of the parents of groom or bride but I've since found that Hanora's parents were Patrick Houlihan and Catherine Goggin. Hanora and her family were from townlands around Ballyferriter. The first of nine children, my great grandfather Patrick was born in Cloghane in 1863. On or about 1870, the family moved to Ballyquin. Denis died of a strangulated hernia at the Dingle workhouse hospital on July 27, 1881. Family lore has it that he had been gored by a bull but who knows whether this is true or not.

In 1877, Denis was a witness called on behalf of a defendant in a murder trial. From what I gather he was there to speak to the defendant's character.

Were it not for Denis' untimely death, this part of my family may never have emigrated to western Massachusetts from the Dingle peninsula.
