Thomas Maguire born 1810 in Enniskillen married Sarah Jane Gregory born 1808 also in Enniskillen. They both sailed to Canada circa 1834-7. Thomas is listed in the 1842 canadian census as a school teacher in Ontario. Later they moved North up the Ottawa River to Allumette Island in Pontiac, Quebec across the river from Pembroke, Ontario where they farmed and raised a large family. One daughter was my Grandmother, Bridget Ann McGuire who pursued a nursing career in Sacramento ,California, USA. She came to California, 1905.
Thomas died in 1880 in Sheenborough, Pontiac, Quebec. Sarah died 1863 in Chapeau, Allumette Isle. Pontiac, Quebec.
The family held education in high esteem and one daughter became a Grey sister in Pembroke and cofounded a High School in Ottawa. Other sisters pursued nursing . All but one son joined the Canadian Expeditionary Forces during WW1.
Descendents to the current century (2000) have had teaching careers.
Note the name was changed to Mcguire from Maguire after arrival in Canada. Most likely because of a census taker.
Another descendent (James Francis Mcguire) joined a jesuit priest (Fr. John Sinnett) and others from Sheenborough, Pontiac, Quebec in founding the Irish Colony of Saskatchewan, Canada in 1905 when the Canadian Government opened it for homesteading. Anyone is welcome to contact me.
