My third Great Grandfather Owen Corrigan and some of his children (the younger ones) spent time in the Carrickmacross Workhouse prioer to emigrating to Australia as part of the Shirley Estate assisted emigration. In 1852 Owen sent a letter to the Shirley agent requesting assistance to emigrate with the remainder of his family and this was granted which also included a payment from the Board Of Guardians at Carrickmacross Workhouse.
Owen, who was from Dunaree Latin townland, Donaghmoyne Parish, Co Monaghan, emigrated to Victoria about 1852
The four eldest children of Owen and Julia Corrigan - Mary (1827), Peter (1829), Patrick (1831) and Andrew (1833) emigrated earlier to Adelaide (SA) on the “Trafalgar” in 1850.
Judith (Julia?) nee McEneany emigrated later in 1858 with their younger children James (1835), John (1837), Alice (1841) and Bernard “Barney” (1843).
