Glas Naíon –  the  fount stream
Glasnevin takes its name from the original early Irish Glais Noeden. Glais usually means boundary stream, and Naíon can mean infants or fount. In this case it is believed the name came from a "Fount Stream" that ran through the monastic settlement here. 

At the time of its foundation, Glais Noeden was the territory of the Gallinge or 'spear jumpers' who were noted spearsmen originating from Gaul or Britain. From these Gauls the whole region of north Dublin took on the name Fine Gall (Fingal) which, in ancient times, must have meant 'the tribe of foreigners' (gall = foreigner/ stranger). In later centuries the name "Fine Gall" was incorrectly used for Norse and Anglo-norman invaders.
