Shannon Gaels is a small rural club based in North Roscommon. We boast two fine facilities in Croghan village and in Cortober village, Carrick on Shannon. The club has a fine tradition and has achieved huge underage success in the 2000s. Currently our 1st team will be playing Division 3 league and Junior A championship in 2017.
We also have a thriving Ladies club which was formed in 2006. The formation of the ladies club had a very positive impact on the locality and received great support from the parish of Croghan, the Shannon Gaels Senior Club and Minor Club. In 2008 they won the Roscommon Junior B title and also have achieved huge underage success.
Roscommon's Senior football team compete in the Connacht Senior Football Championship which they have won 24 times, to include 2017. The 1940s successes were the pinnacle of Roscommon's All-Ireland Senior Football Championship achievements. They also reached the final in 1962.
Croghan contributed two star Gaelic footballers to Roscommon's last All-Ireland Senior Football Championship titles (won back-to-back in 1943 and 1944). Hugh Boyd (-1964) of Ballinvilla was an all-round athlete and a keen footballer. He represented his native county in Minor, Junior and Senior Champhioship games. He and his 2nd cousin, Tommy Collins of Canbo, played the all-Ireland Senior championships for Co. Roscommon. James Creighton of Killapoge was also a great Roscommon footballer during the 1930s.
