Mary Smith was born in 1886 to Ellen Smyth in Rathvilly, Carlow, Ireland. Mary was illegitimate and the father is not listed on the baptism certificate. Thus the identity of her real father remains a mystery. Mary had an older brother, James, whose father is listed on the baptism certificate as James Morgan. When Mary was about 7 her mother lived with, (never married), her older brother's father, James Morgan, who was from Baltinglass, Wicklow. Ellen and James had more children, Kathleen, Thomas, Ellen, Susan and Leo. Mary adopted the surname Morgan and was thence known as Mary Morgan. Maybe James Morgan was her father. We don't know.
In 1913 Mary emigrated to Australia. She didn't tell her family and they weren't aware she had emigrated until she wrote and told them. She had been working in London and made a spur of the moment decision to move to Australia in the hope of a better life. After being in Australia for a while her family wrote her that a family friend, Edward Cahill, was living in Sydney. Mary and Edward met and married soon after. They had three children, Patrick, Eileen and John.
