  • Hello,

I am curious about your James Gray.  My great great grandmother was called Mary Jane Gray born about 1832 and an inmate of Armagh Workhouse from 1842 to 1848 until she came to Australia as part of the Earl Grey Orphan scheme. Mary's parents were apparently Henry and Ellen who I presume had died before 1848. She also had an older sister named Ellen who was in the Workhouse with her for a few years. I am not sure whether Ellen died while in the Workhouse or left the Workhouse. Mary named one of her daughters Matilda which has made me wonder if this was a family name. Have you come across any Henry Grays in your research?

    Thank you for your time.

    Kind regards,

    Michael Barker

Ever so sorry for the delay, Michael.

My James Gray did have a daughter Mary Jane Gray, but she is my ancestor and she didn't go to Australia. James Gray and his wife Jane McWhirter moved to Belfast with all of their children and there they died. Most of their children stayed in Belfast to raise families, two sons Moses and Thomas moved to cotland where their descendant are found.

I've never encountered a Henry for Ellen Gray in the course of my reasearch, but I'll certainly keep a look-out.

    Happy hunting!

  • Hello Simon,

Thank you very much for your response. The use of some of the same christian names in your family and mine made me wonder if there could have been some connection.

I will keep looking. I've had a DNA test so hopefully that may help me in identifying anyone who had connections to Henry & Ellen.

    kind regards,
    Michael
