Michael Naughton was my great great grandfather. He was one of the tenants of Sir Montagu Chapman who emigrated to South Australia in 1847. Sir Montagu Chapman arranged for assisted passages for 200 of his tenants to travel to South Australia. Michael, Rose and Margaret Naughton sailed on the ship, Trafalgar, arriving in Adelaide on 2 July 1847. I have not found baptism records for Rose and Margaret, but from records found in South Australia, I think they were probably Michael’s sisters.
Griffith’s Valuation for the townland of Cloran and Corcullentry, civil parish of Killua, reveals many of the same names as the passengers who travelled on the Trafalgar: Bell, Conlan, Garrigan, Goortry, Lynch, Plunkett, Reilly, Sheridan. These people would have been friends and neighbours in Ireland but I don’t know if they maintained any connections after their arrival in South Australia.
Michael Naughton was the first of my mother’s ancestors to arrive in South Australia. In 1856 he married Bridget O’Loughlin who was from County Meath. They had eight children. Their third child, Mary Ann Naughton, was my great grandmother.
Michael and Bridget were farmers in the mid-north of South Australia. Michael died on 26 October 1891 and is buried in the Peterborough cemetery. Sadly I know nothing about Michael’s parents or his life in Ireland before he emigrated at the age of 23.
