The details below have been taken from the 1901 and 1911 censuses and the Civil Records on the Irish Geneology website.
I believe my Great Grandfather was Patrick Corcoran who was a Farmer and Blacksmith living at Sheehaun (Hughes) in Kilgefin, Roscommon. Sheehaun is 17 acres which I’m told is very small for a Townland. As far as I can tell only three families lived there at the time of the census (Corcoran, Banahan and Conran). The house in Sheehaun would have been made of stone, brick or concrete and would have had a wooden or thatched roof. There would have been two rooms with three windows at the front. For the purpose of the census this was recorded as a second class house. There was also a ‘cow house’. According to the 1901 census Patrick was 56 years of age meaning he would have been born in 1845. He is described as a widower on the census. He is not on the 1911 census so had either moved or passed away. I’m unable to find a record of his death.
He had two sons: Michael, Born 10/11/1882 and John, Born 16/4/1884. According to their birth records their mothers name was Susan, formerly Sheil, but I can find no record of a birth, marriage or death for her.
Michael was also a Blacksmith and I believe that he was my Grandfather. He married Bridget Kelly (born 1874, from Curraghroe, Ballyleague) on 27/4/1903. Witnesses to the marriage were Kate Kelly and Dominick Tiernan.
Michael and Bridget had six children: William, born 3/6/1904: Mary Margaret, born 11/8/1905: Catherine, born 11/2/1907: Patrick Joseph, born 4/3/1909: Susan, born 26/8/1910 and Michael born 20/3/1912
Patrick Joseph was my father and married my mother at the Catholic Church of Ballagh. I think the church was Saint Mary's and the church was on the same site since 1803. The original chruch was demolished in 1956 and replaced by a modern church of the same name. At this time of his marriage Patrick Joseph was still living at Sheehaun (Hughes).
Patrick (senior) other son, John, was a Farm Labourer and was not shown on the 1911 census. He married Mary Crowley (b. 2/7/1871 from Kilmurtha near Curraghroe) on 23/4/1914. Witnesses to the marriage were Peter Fox and Annie Fox. When he married John’s residence was shown as Sheehaun. I assume he had moved away when the 1911 census was done and moved back before 1914.
