James O'Reilly was born Feb. 10, 1841to Patrick O'Reilly and Bridget (Doyle) O'Reilly. He was baptised at Columbkill Parish and was the eldest of seven children.
James travelled to Cleveland, Ohio sometime prior to 1866 to complete his ecclesiastical studies St. Mary’s Seminary. At the age of 25 years he was ordained on the 1st of October in 1866. Cleveland was a young and growing city at that time. Rev. James O'Reilly founded a new parish in Cleveland named Columbkill after his home parish in Ireland. It was soon absorbed into another parish and James was assigned to other parishes, first in Lima, Ohio and then Toledo, Ohio.
Four siblings eventually joined him in Toledo: Thomas, Charles, Ann and Phillip. Two other siblings are believed to have remained in Ireland: John and Rose. Rev. James died fairly young at the age of 44 in 1885 but was noted as one of the "Pioneer Priests" in a book about the early Cleveland Diocese. His brothers and sister, Ann, each married and raised families, either in Toledo (Thomas, Charles and Phillip) or Cleveland (Ann).
