James McCarty : Short Biography

My 3rd Great Grand Uncle, James McCarty, was baptised in Ballymore on 12 November 1829.  His father was Malachi McCarty and his mother Bridget Lynn.  He had four brothers John, Malachi, Michael and Thomas.  They had all moved to Birmingham, England after brother Thomas's birth in 1838 and before the English 1841 census.  I have also found a baptism record for Malachi jnr.He was baptised in Ballymore on 27 January 1831, but have no birth records for the rest of the family.  Where they were before living in Ballymore is unknown.  I visited the priest in Ballymore but he had no other records for the family.

James was transported to Australia for stealing an apple pie on the 6 May 1847, after spending some months in Pankhurst prison..  His sentence was for 7 years.  Whilst on the voyage to Geelong, Australia all the prisoners on the ship, 'Joseph Somes' received a royal pardon.  The prisoners were still disembarked in Australia and had to seek employment for themselves.  James aquired work with Robert Sutherland as a general servant.  He was paid 20 pounds per annum.  He eventually made his way back to England.  He then went into business with his brothers operating as 'Slaters'.  He married and had six children.  He died on 25 September 1870 aged 41.
