William Nickle/Nichol 1799

Back to List

William Nickle emigrated to the US in 1825, with his wife Mary ("Mollie") McBeth (b Aug 12, 1796).  We have no historical records of this, but handed-down family information says that his parents names were Andrew Nickle and Jane or Rebecca Cunningham.  Jane or Rebecca was the daughter of Archibald Cunningham.  Andrew supposedly had a brother named William Nickle.

Our William the immigrant had a relative in Philadelphia, with whom the family stayed briefly before moving west to Green Township, Indiana County, PA, where they raised their family. William died on Sept 17, 1845 and Mollie died on May 18, 1874.

Family tradition has it that the family was from the town of Ballymagorry in county Tyrone.  A US descendant, William Nichol Dickie, visited there, I believe in the 1940's, and met descendants of Joseph and Margaret, who still resided there at the time, although I think now that they may not have lived within the village, but in the townland of Woodend, which adjoined Ballymagorry. Researching this family at the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland found only the following records:  rent records of the manor of Cloghogal, which included the town of Ballymagorry.  William Nickle and Andrew Nickle and Archibald Cunningham were all listed as tenants, so this corroborates the names of William's father, uncle, and grandfather.  The Nickles were listed in the townland of Woodend in the tenant listing.  A map was found of the town of Ballymagorry in the late 1700s which showed several households under the surname McBeth.  The church records of the Presbyterian church in Leckpatrick include James and Margaret Nichol and Archibald Cunningham as members, but the church was founded in 1835, after William and Mollie left Ireland, so they are not listed.   If you have information regarding this family please contact Karen Worley at krworley@aol.com.

  • Hi David.  I don't know if the site will notify you when I type a comment here, but I thought I would try.  If you are a Nicholl from Leckpatrick, maybe we are cousins.  During what time frame did your Nicholls live there?  And also, do you know if Strabane 1st Presbyterian has records that would go back as far as 1825?  Thanks

  • Hi Karen , it turns out William Nickle is my direct Ancestor ,I've since made contact with Joe , Eric , David and several other descendents in the USA via Facebook and by DNA matching on Ancestry which led me too them , I have visited your tree also on Ancestry which had a copy of a genealogist record that began with Andrew Nicholl as first settling in pen state. I got very interested when it showed a picture of a painting of the Nickle house which my Uncle Willie and his family bought and lived in for many years. If love a full copy of that record of possible as it probably would tie up a iot of loose ends .

  • Oh that's exciting. Which William Nickle is your ancestor?  Was he the son of Joseph Nickle and Margaret MacFarland?  There were a lot of William Nickles in that family.  "My" William Nickle, the one to whome this conversation is attached,  left in 1825 and immigrated to Pennsylvania.  I don't believe he left any descendants in Ireland.  But his father supposedly had a brother named William, and his brother Joseph had a son named William.  How does your line go?

The problem with copying that William Nichol Dickie genealogy is that it is a little book, with pages only 3.5 in x 6 in, and there are 150 pages or so, mostly tracing descendants of the family in Pennsylvania.  there are only 8 pages related to Ireland family, which I posted on Ancestry.  All the other pages are descendants of William Nickle and Mary McBeth, in Pennsylvania, plus 4 pages that are the spouses and children of William's sister Ann Nickle who married George Moore and came to the US in 1838. If your loose ends are in Ireland then I'm afraid it won't be helpful.
