Patrick Aherne left County Kerry about 1848 with his mother, Margaret Moore Aherne, brothers, John and Michael, and sisters, Mary and Margaret.

Unknown if his father, Patrick, traveled with them.

Records of Michael, Mary and Margaret's baptisms is on file at parish church in Moyvane (Newtown Sandes) County Kerry.

  • I am seeking my Ahearn family.  ( The spelling I know changes so I can't rule out  relatives who may be  use a different form.  My family was listed variously as Ahearn or O'Hearn.And I have a friend whose name in the US is just Hearn. )   I have found a marriage registry for what appears to be my g-g-granparents' marriage- Timothy Ahearn and Mary Ann Madden in Cork. But that is my only clue.  I haven't  yet found their residence or family.   They emigrated from Ireland to Boston as a family unit, residing in Brookline, Mass ( a Boston suburb) and I am continuing to document their descendants.  Their children were  Daniel, David, Anna/Annie and Mary and possibly Michael. Annie is my g-grandmother.

  • Thanks for troubli ng to reply.  I knew it was a long shot but  had to reach out just in case.  I forgot to note that on the Cork marriage registry they spelled his name Ahern. Oh well-we are all cousins one way or another.  Thanks again.  Joanne Close

  • My Graqnmother  Hannah Shea has listed on her marriage certificate her mother Hanoria O'Hean ... I always though perhaps it waqs Ahearn but all I know is that she was from County Kerry  Hannah Shea married my Grandfather James Morrissey 1903 in NYC    Know its mot much to work on but any ideas

  • Diana, I think you are correct that the name in Ireland was Ahearn. County Kerry records are kept at the local church where they were from and there is a repository at Tralee. When we went to Ireland last, 2001, we saw our records at the church and tried to see them at Tralee but the office was not open and we had a schedule to keep so couldn't go back. There are still quite a few Ahern's in County Kerry. Our spelling had an 'e' at the end which is more rare. It didn't make it any easier to find record, however. Please check out Dennis Ahern's website where he has a lot of information on Ahern's in America.   • We don't have any record that my husband's great grandfather ever lived in Linton, Indiana and he didn't have a son named Timothy. Their name in Ireland (County Kerry) was Aherne and the first census had them in Iowa by 1860, with the spelling O'Harron but that was most likely how it was pronounced. Subsequent spelling was always O'Hern. I've also found land records prior to 1860 for them and the spelling on those was O'Hern. What I've found in my Ireland searches and trips to Ireland is that the names were consistent in their spelling while they lived in Ireland. If the name was spelled as Ahern or Aherne or Hearn, that is always how it was spelled in records. Once they came to America, spelling was at the mercy of the person doing the recording. That is why there are so many variations. Good luck with your research!

  • LSG cool, My grandfather Timothy lived in Detroit which is where I was born. I guess we visited our family in Linton In when I was very small but I have very little info on Linton other than most of my family is from there and my great grandfather died in a coal mine at 70 years old.

  • Looking for origins of Anastasia O'Hearn/Ahearn/O'Hearain. Born 1786 in County Kerry. Married Sept 7 1810 in St.John's Newfoundland. She married Patrick Downey right off the ship. He was from Ballyragget Kilkenny.

    Hoping her kids names would maybe direct who her parents and siblings could be. Mary, Bridget, Anastasia, James, Catherine, Elizabeth, Patrick, Anne, Thomas and Michael are their kids.
     

    I am her 4th gen great granddaughter.
