Church Ruin and Graveyard located in Clooney townland, Clooney, County Clare.

Clooney Church and graveyard is located off the main R352 Road from Portumna to Ennis.

This graveyard dates from the 1700s and contains about 150 headstones.  It is of mixed religion with both Catholic and Protestant families buried there at one time.

The Church was noted as a ruin in the 1800s, and it is not known what Saint was commemorated here.

Many of the families associated with this graveyard are from the Clooney, Tulla and Quin parishes.

There is a large monument dedicated to Dennis O'Duffy who fought at the Battle of Vinegar Hill in the 1798 Rising.

There is also a large monument dedicated to 3 local men who were I.R.A. members and fought for the Republic during the Civil War.

The transcriptions are being taken and will be uploaded to the Clare Library website in 2018.

The graveyard has recently added a new section and there is an active graveyard committee who look after the grounds.
