Edward O'Brien Esq. of Ennistymon House, inherited Ennistymon Castle upon the death of his father in 1743. He was a direct descendant Sir Donnagh O'Brien of Duagh and of Murrough, the first Earl of Thomond. The O'Brien dynasty are a royal and noble house founded in the 10th century by Brian Boru of the Dál gCais (aka Dalcassians).
(In 1682 Donnogh O'Bryen of Dough, county Clare, was granted lands in the baronies of Corcomroe, Burren and Inchiquin, amounting to over 5,000 acres.)
Edward O’Brien was the first of his family to convert to the Church of Ireland, having done so in 1755 (see Penal Laws in Ireland).
In 1764, he demolished much of the old castle building and built a new Georgian House (still extant as the Falls Hotel).
