Richard Elley : Short Biography

According to his death certificate in 1898, Richard Elley was born in 1808 but it is unknown if he was born in Ireland or England. He may have had a sister called Mary Jane Elley married to a Catholic called Thomas Ryder. Also there is an Ellen Elley, father Richard, who was born in Ireland and who married first James Tempest then John Clayton. She lived and died in Horbling, Lincolnshire. Richard married Anne Gonne at the German Lutheran church in 1832 but all his children were baptised at St Nicholas Without or St Luke's. He lived at 41 New Street and was a boot and shoemaker by trade. He was the appointed shoemaker to the Dublin Poor Law Workhouse, and was a member of the Vestry inof St Nicholas Without and St Luke's. He was noted in an obituary in 1916 when his grandson John Parkinson died at the Somme, and the notice said that he was the nephew of Sir John Elley KCB (1766-1839) who was a hero of Waterloo and former governor of Galway, and a MP in the British parliament. No definite link has been found yet. He had 12 children, including my wife's 2x great-grandmother Alicia Barbara Elley, Thomas who took over the shoe firm in Aungier Street, and two children who emigrated to America. He died in 1898.
