Back to List

John Carmody was born in Kilmihil, County Clare about 1813 and, together with his wife Bridget and infant daughter Margaret, came out to Australia arriving in Sydney in June 1851. Sadly his daughter Margaret died on the voyage out. John and Bridget settled in the lower Hunter Region, north of Sydney, where John acquired virgin land which he cleared and farmed, surviving floods, droughts and bush fires. They had 6 more children who, in turn, produced for John and Bridget 36 grandchildren and 161 great grandchildren. John died in March 1905.

  • John's sister, Bridget (b1805 Kilmihil) married my 3X ggrandfather, Thomas Cunningham in Kilmihil. Their son, Michael, my 2X ggrandfather emigrated to Australia in 1865. John and Bridget Carmody's parents are Daniel Carmody 1782-1851 and Mary Lorigan 1775-about 1866. On a visit to Kilmihil in 2019 I located Thomas and Bridget's grave in Kilmihil cemetery.

This would make you 1st cousin 3 times removed of my wife Paula (daughter of Molly Carmody).

Per my records your Michael Cunningham and wife Mary O'Grady had 13 kids including 9 girls. Who are you descended from?

Do you live in the Hunter region of NSW?

  • Hi Alan, I was surprised to hear from you as I've been in touch with you before through your wife's cousin, Nicky. You were also kind enough to send me excerpts from your book that related to the Cunninghams. My grandfather is Thomas from Millers Forest. Some time ago you asked me if I had dates for Thomas and Bridget. I've confirmed that Thomas died 14th June 1856, married Bridget 1834 and Bridget died 1864. Their headstone in Kilmihil old cemetery states that son Martin 1836-1864 as well as daughter, Eliza 1849-1864 lie with them.
I thought that my comments on this site may help someone else . Nice to hear from you. Regards, Bernadette
