Mary Cassin/Cashen (nee Feely) emigrated from Lemonstown, County Kilkenny, to the U.S. in 1855, with 8 or 9 of her 11 children.

Her husband, James Cashen, died in Ireland in 1846. According to Griffiths Valuation, the family were tenants on the Rossenarra Estate in Lemonstown. The eldest sons, Martin and Michael, and possibly oldest daughter, Catherine, emigrated to the U.S. around 1850 and lived in New York state, possibly with Cassin family members who emigrated from Ireland earlier. Martin moved to Mercer County, Illinois in 1854. Mary Cassin and the younger children may have lived in New York state with Cassin family members for 2-3 years before joining Martin in Mercer County in 1858. Martin and Michael were farmers and the older girls worked as domestic help until they married.
