My second great-grandmother, Johanna Maher was born in 1844 to Pierse Maher and Bridget Dunne Maher. She was baptised on 15th of March 1844 in the parish of Moyne and Templetuohy. The diocese was Cashel and Emly. Her sponsors were Connor and Mary Maher.
She married Matthew Ryan of Shallee, Tipperary. She bore eleven children and all of them lived. Michael J was born 1863, Katherine T born in 1870, Mary Ann born 1872, John born in 1873, Timothy born in 1873, Bridget born in 1874, Roger born 1876, Matthew born in 1880, Josephine born 1882, Johannah born 1882, and Daniel born in 1883.
She emigrated to the United States in 1898, the year after her husband, Matthew died. Most of her children came with her. A few had already emigrated there. They settled in Torrington, Connecticut, a mill town. She lived to be eighty-three-years-old, dying in Torrington in 1927.
