Parish Record from Shandrum Parish | Ireland | VIEW SOURCE |
I’m looking for information regarding the family of my Great Grandfather, Patrick McCarthy, who was baptized in Shandrum Parish in 1836. Here is the information that I have discovered to date:
From the Shandrum Parish Record I have found his date of baptism to be 2 February 1836. He was the son of William McCarthy and Mary (Keating) McCarthy.
From the Shandrum Parish Record I have found that Patrick married Frances Gorman on 29 January 1860.
Patrick and Frances had the following children: (all names and baptismal dates recorded in the Shandrum Parish Register with the exception of Mary and John)
William 22 Dec 1860
Mary 1863
Thomas 22 Jan 1865
Katherine 23 Jun 1867
Frances 26 Sep 1869
John 1873
Margaret 29 Aug 1875
Ellen 19 Nov 1877
Bridget 27 Jun 1880
The entire family left the Newtownshandrum area and immigrated to the US in 1881. I have been able to track all of their whereabouts after their arrival in the US with one exception. Their daughter Ellen must have died prior to the family’s immigration. Her name was not on the Passenger Manifest that I found that documented the family’s transatlantic trip. I have found no documentation, however, to confirm the date of her death. Presumably it was in or around Newtownshandrum prior to their departure in May 1881.
The Shandrum Parish record has been kind again to reveal Patrick’s siblings. They include the following names and baptismal dates:
Mary 14 July 1827
William 10 Sep 1833
Denis 9 Dec 1838
Bridget 4 Apr 1842
Ellen 22 Dec 1844
Since I have a fair amount of information on Patrick and Frances (Gorman) McCarthy’s immediate family, I am more interested in discovering information on the generation(s) that preceded Patrick. I know that his parents were William McCarthy and Mary Keating based on Patrick’s baptismal record. I don’t have documentation to confirm that William’s parents were Callahan McCarthy and Mary Powers but I think that they might be. Sadly, I have no information regarding Patrick's mother, Mary Keating.
As an aside, I am interested in finding the cemetery where members of St. Joseph’s Church in Newtownshandrum may have been buried back in the timeframe of the early to mid-1800s. Were there a number of cemeteries where burials took place with the individuals whose records are documented in the Shandrum Parish registers during that time frame?
If anyone is doing research on any members of this branch of the McCarthy family, I would be very interested in getting in contact with you to exchange information. I am very willing to share all of the information that I have.
If anyone in the Newtownshandrum area is related to this branch of the McCarthy family, I’d enjoy meeting you. I typically spend my summers in Cork City and can easily manage a meet-up at a mutually convenient location. (I won’t be in Ireland this summer due to the international virus problem.)
Thank you in advance for any information that might be shared with me.
